I think I might need a new head
« on: Apr 23, 2005, 09:05:03 PM »
To make a long story short. I just took an 87 2x4 cab, and put it on my 83 frame and running gear. The 83 that I had was stolen from me. But I got it back. All seemed fine except for the body. That was toatled. But the engine and running gear was O.K. I've only had it running for about 3 days now and haven't drove it too far. 10 miles is probabally the farthest. The engine seems to be running ok. At least for one that's a stolen recovery. But, I get some major pressure building up in the radaitor. I pulled the T-stat out and no change. Thought it might've been a head gasket. So, I ran a compression check. And according to that I'm fine. 155-165 with none bleeding off for 5 minutes. The truck smokes like I'm from some old Bond movie. Also, I seem to be burning a lot of oil. And I mean A LOT. I'd say about 2 quarts worth in almost 25 miles. Don't think it's a leak cause it's been sitting on a garage floor with no puddle under it. But to make sure, I cleaned off the engine today to see if it leaks anywhere. Was draining the radiator to pull the T-stat today, and the (new) fluid had what seemed to be all my missing oil in it. Could my head be toast???

sounds like you may have a cracked head or block.  if it's burning that much oil, it's probably not a bad idea to tear it down and rebuild it.

Rebiuld? Nah, if that's the case I'll just find another engine. I'll probabally find another head and slap it on. If that don't work. Then I guess I'll have to swap engines in it. No need for a rebuild on this one. The truck was just thrown together so I could play at Disney Ok. on the 6,7,8 of May. To me, it isn't worth it to throw money at it to rebuild the engine. I've got another project truck in the garage that a new engine would go in first. Like I said, I just built this one so I could play.
