If the Pope had a 4x4 what would it be?  Maybe he'd take the Popemobile wheelin, I think that's an old G wagen.  I bet stream crossings would be a piece of cake for the pope.

They could have chose someone a bit younger that might live a while longer. I'm catholic and feel it would be wise for them to get someone younger in there to maybe shake things up and make some changes. :twocents:

Well pope John Paul was young when they elected him and he did shake things up.  That is one of the reasons they elected an older pope, so the can have a change of pace more often, kind of sad to say..

I heard the new pope was in Hitler's army in WW2. That should spark some controversy.

The article on yahoo said that he wan't a Hitler youth by choice and actually went awol.  He was actually a us prisoner of war for a short time when they discovered that he was a German soldier.  It sounds like he is super conservative and judgemental.  I do not agree with much of anything that the Catholic church stands for, but conservative sounds like a good plan to me.

I hate to be a cynic but here it goes.

This is the BEST positive press the Catholic church has gotten, at least in this country, for several years.  They are on every TV station and people have been glued to their sets.  Every media outlet is all over this story.  Where will they bury John Paul II? Who will they choose?  What color smoke?  Every chanell ran stories on the John Paul II and how great he was.  Pumping up the church in a positive light.  Lots of people are feeling good again about all churches and all religions.  BTW I think this is good.  But...

So here's the cynical part, maybe by having an old Pope they will repeat this again in the near future.  I know I'm an ass, but there is always an underlying motive to big decisions and organizations like the Catholic Church.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, just something my peanut brain thought about when I heard the new Pope's age.  Just an observation.

Thats actually a good observation IMO.  too bad so much stuff has to be political.  Not abad thing to have people going back to church, but then again, JP's death had a huge following cause he was in service(?) for so long

I did not intend to compare religion to politics; however, I am quite conservative on my religious views (not catholic) and am in favor of holding the moral line.

To me the whole Pope issue is purely political.  I gots no interest in organized religion, and I certainly don't think any church, catholic or otherwise, is really in any position to determine what is moral.

I agree with you on the pope issue.  Of course, I am not Catholic, so I really dont care too much, No offense to anyone who is catholic.  :beerchug: However, I do churches ae a decent place to get a moral base from.  Granted, each person must develop his or her own morals or standards.  There are people that go to my church that despise drinking.  There are others that dont see a problem with it as long as it is done in moderation, including myself.  That is just an example, and probably a bad one.  IMO everyone has to decide for him or herself what their moral standards are going to be, but everyone is going to have to face the consequences in the long run.  That is why the church is here, to help guide us in making the right decisions.  But like I said, each has to decide for themselves.

Sorry if I stepped on any toes

No sore toes here.  CBS News did a poll of about 600 people in the US and more than 70 percent said the same type of thing.  They would follow their conscience over the pope when it came to morality.  People sometimes surprise me by being a tad more free thinking than I give them credit for.   :-\\

Well, it's good to know people are free thinking.  I'm glad to hear people would trust their own conscience before blindly following a leader of any type (I'm glad we have the option, too!  Thank you men and women of the armed forces past and present).  People as a whole need leaders, I think.  At least someone to uphold the standards and laws so things don't get out of hand, whether a leader is some tribal cheif or president of the US.  The church is there to guide people like Blackdog said.  Maybe to help people who are on the fence or don't know what to do in times of hardship or something.  Also, the pope has a much bigger role in world politics than I realized when I was younger.

I thinkthey did that on purpose.  fnd an older pope that is a little different from JP, and let him change some stuff, then let him die, so theycan put a more "liberal" guy in there
