My 1985 4x4 pickup's OEM A340H automatic has been diagnosed as having internal issues by two local transmission shops.FYI,It has harsh up and down shifts. The TV cable and the valve body both checked out OK. The trans. has 102,000 miles, the pan has been off three times now and never anything abnormal found in it or with the T.F. Neither trans. shop knows what wrong until the transmission is opened up. I have been told $5-6 grand by the time the trans. is R$R'd. That sad news has me looking for a repair shop that specializes in early Toyotas. I really like my automatic but knowing how much more popular a manual is at resell time, I'd like to get price quotes for comparison.

That price reads a little high.

If you drop the tranny yourself, you should be in the $2800 to $3200 range for a rebuild.

I loved my automatic in my first 1986 Longbed.
