Boise, ID lurker finally joined, '85 4Runner
« on: Jul 09, 2024, 07:40:29 PM »
Good day all,

Hoping there are some Boise, ID members to link up with. I am currently gearing up for a 22RE >> 7M swap which should be exciting if I go through with it.

I've learned a lot over the years lurking here and the other common forums, but some questions about this potential build and Marlin Crawler expertise on drivelines has finally driven me to make an acct.

Welcome to the forum.

Swaps are always “exciting”.

As you know from your “years of lurking”, there are a good number of threads on swaps.

As I remember, there are some documented 7M swaps.

I’ve only done one swap, and I experienced what the guys I know who have done a bunch of them say…..
...expect the unexpected, don’t be in a hurry, have a backup budget, and size matters.

Is your vehicle a 4Runner?  What year?  What is your objective in doing the swap?

'85 4Runner. I want to be able to take the 4runner on longer trips going highway speeds over mountain passes and anything else without going deaf or with my foot in the gas at the top end of the 22RE's power band. 7M is the current leading option in my mind because of its compatibility with my existing drivetrain. W56 and gear driven t case.

Thought about 5VZ and 3RZ of course, but I have a line on a 7MGE-T that is in a car, running, with a few nice-to-haves already inside(ARP studs, for example). The 5VZ is a pricey swap and I like inline engines. 3RZ is pulling at my love for the 22RE, so I haven't ruled it out, just want more than 150HP.
