1979 Toyota AXLE SWAP INFO NEEDED
« on: Jun 17, 2023, 05:16:46 PM »
Hello Friends,

It's been a while since I posted anything. Life has thrown many curve balls and yadda yadda I am starting to work on my 1979 pickup again. While traveling I picked up two factory E-locker axle assemblies.

I am planning on using the 4runner one for the diff locker to stick into the front axle on my pickup. The rear I might swap all together for the Tacoma housing for the width/brakes/thickness.

My questions are:
1) do I need to do anything special to the Tacoma housing or can I just stuff the whole rear axle under the truck?
2) do I need any special adjustments ASIDE FROM CUTTING/WELDING the front axle housing to make the front locker work? (idk axle shafts and whatnot)

Please let me know! MODS IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG SPOT OR NEEDS TO BE CHANGED PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I SEARCHED FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES BUT COULD NOT FIND THREADS FOR THIS.

The wider Tacoma rear with the bigger brakes is a easy choice.  You'll have to swap/weld the e-brake bracket onto the opposite side.  The spring perches will line up, you may also have to swap the brake lines and mount side to side.  All this small stuff will comr to light once the axle is on place.  The 4-runner axle will require bracket removal, spring perch install and other mods, not a problem iust more work.  Taco is the easiest, I like easy and wide.   :twocents:
The E-locker will work in a modified front housing and stock axles, but the Birfs will puke with big tires and hard wheeling/crawling
