!983 SR5 PU Tranny swap
« on: Apr 09, 2023, 10:42:04 AM »
 :clap: Finally completed my Tranny swap  I replaced my old L-52 with a W56-B {rebuild} from an 87

Used a set of stock U-bolts cut away part of original crossmember mounts , welded plate onto forward part of stock crossmember and drilled out new mounting holes. Stock Front driveshaft from 87 fits . I have the rear DS being modified {shortened}
Have to do more mods on floor tunnel for shifters {waiting on a "Marlin short shifter} , all is good !

It's been a while since I've been able to be on the forum AND I want to thank one & all for the assistance
Thanks MC  :bowdown:

I've always been a big supporter of the w56 swap for first gens. Well worth the hassle . I'm certainly glad I went that route.

Now you just need some Marlin dual cases and your set .

Yeup T-addict , I had an old W-56 in shed thought I'd put it to good use. The old L-52 had worn out it's welcome

As far as "Duals" go I'll have to wait till this coming WildFire Season is over ......think we're gonna be busy  :yikes:
Thanks

Along with my tranny swap I have to get stock rear drive shaft shortened {re-tubed} about 5" . This truck is on a longbed chassis. My machinist tells me that because of beveled ends of the stock tube where they are welded to yoke mounts ...he will have to use a smaller diameter tube  {similar to the mid-late 80s 4x4 trucks} for modification .
This truck has a 22R 5Speed 5;29 gears centerforce II clutch and lockers and 34/10.5/15 swampers.
My concern ....will the smaller diameter tube hold up  ?
Anybody that has gone this route , appreciate your input, Thanx !

Driveline shop should be able to set you up with thicker wall tube, making them much stronger than stock.
 I've always used HighAngle for my driveline work and they use thicker wall tube for the rear and even thicker for the front. I dont recall how thick but there is a limit for the rear of street driven trucks.

I'm limited out here in Northern NM as far as machinist /quality shops, This fella's been one of the good ones.
Thanx !
