Not another 86 pickup build
« on: Nov 14, 2022, 05:24:20 AM »
Hey everyone. A few months back I purchased a 1986 pickup/reg cab/22R for $700/cdn with the plan of making a one of a kind build.

Plan is as follows:

1986 Toyota pickup
2000 Toyota Tundra frame

I bought the truck knowing it would need a complete rebuild due to the frame being broken or rotten in so many places.
This is the beginning of the job. Disassembled the truck and started cutting the new frame

Used the pieces of old frame rail to fish plate the cut.

Had to take 10” out of the frame width wise. I cut out the old stamped cross members and made new ones. I started by taking out 5” on each side of the transmission cross member and went from there.

Started welding all the holes closed on the frame so I can seal it.

So far I have removed all the unneeded brackets. I will be making all of the leaf spring mounts and everything for the sas myself. My plan is to go with 63” springs in the rear and a RUF from 90’s truck. I have designed it so I just have to move the body mounts forward by approximately 6”. I will not be using the stock body mounts for the cab as I will be replacing the rockers with 2x5” tubing, so I am going to just build them off of that. I have an ARB air lock for the rear and am planning to keep the front open for now. Am building the truck around 35” tires as we don’t really have crazy trails here. As far as the rear of the truck I have not decided and would love some ideas.

Thanx man. I have been a fabricator since I was in school. This is my dream build. I actually just this morning located the heart of the truck. Going to swap in a 2.7 motor, harness and computer. I will be making a pretty much new harness as I want all LED light and signals. Not just doing the fab myself, I will be doing everything.

I copied your photo to my computer.  I used Microsoft Office Picture Manager.  You can do it with Windows Paint also.

Awesome fabrication, I like the idea of the newer frame to save the old truck. Are you carrying over anything else from the Tundra?

No. I wanted to keep as much of the original stuff that I could.

Been a while since working on the truck. Got some done yesterday and today. Got the RUF mocked in and made temp brackets for the springs so I can move it for motor and cab fab.

Got the Off Road Solutions stand alone wiring harness and ecu. Man oh man do they make quality harnesses. The motor and transmission will be going in this weekend so I can make motor mounts and finish the transmission cross member.

Front wheels on and motor in today. Am hoping to have the body on tomorrow so I can check for proper body vs frame placement.

I am absolutely pumped with the progress this past weekend. I was able to get the rear Chevy 63” springs in. I had originally planned on having to remake all the brackets for this swap. Luckily it turns out that when I took the 10” outta the width of the frame it was also the exact amount needed to be taken out for the stock spring mounts to work with the stock axle width. The stock mounts are only 61” apart so with the stock shackle from the Chevy they sit to long. I have measured, if I do a 4-6” shackle flip, it will put the leaf spring bushing right where it needs to be. This fortunately has saved me at least 20 or more hours of fabricating.

Finally the snow is all gone in my part of the country. Was able to fire up the old tractor and get the body on. It’s a tight fit. Will have to message the firewall a bit to clear the exhaust on the 3rz.
