Nations 2RZ Turbo build
« on: Aug 19, 2022, 05:29:38 PM »
Hi guys! Im starting up a new project! 2RZ turbo, LCE High boost Turbo kit, Haltech ECU. 1986 2wd pickup that im going to convert to 4x4.

Going to start by cleaning up this boat anchor of a 2RZ I just picked up. It was pulled out of a 98 Tacoma, 2WD. After my last venture with the 3RZ. I had learned a lot and am grateful to have found an 8 port with a coil. The 8 port flows better than the 4 port and the coil allows for ease of tuning and is potentially more reliable when submerged. OK here we gooooo!

A little progress today. Had quite a few set backs with the hoist. fitment issues. had to exchange parts and do a little customization but finally got the engine out of the bed of my dodge and into the garage. Need an engine stand here soon, but the bike lift will work for now. Got started removing some components and soaking the exhaust flange nuts in wd-40. It looks like the engine will clean up nice though!

Made a little more progress today. got the hacked up harness off. Need to find myself an engine stand ASAP. Trying to decide what color I want to paint the valve cover and block. May just have to go with Red and black again.

May just have to go with Red and black again.

When I did my rebuild of my 22RE, I painted the block black and the rocker cover red.  I wished I'd been a tad smarter and painted the block light gray.

Why?  With black paint it is very difficult to see and oil leaks or fluid leaks.

If or when I buy a rebuild, I will request a light gray on the block.

Noisy???....  OK a little turbo spin..Blow Off Valve, Exhaust Whistle, Flutter, and the Screamer Pipe....  :gap:

Actually turbo noises sound like something is loose and the engine has an exhaust leak. :disturbed:

I prefer the 1,000 Hz whine of blower at about 7,500 RPMs.

Fun???  .....Yeah... no such thing as too much fun. :beerchug:

unfortunately, the original vehicle i had picked fell through. shipping was way too much money. I have found another truck but have to agree on a price. these things have really gone up in value.

I have decided to rebuild the 2RZ and get it ready for some boost. Ordered up some tools and getting ready to strip down the block and give everything a nice electrolysis bath and send the block off to a machine shop.

Doesnt look too bad in there. Cylinder 4 has some scoring but should be fine after some good honing. need to get some measurements, pistons and its off to the machine shop. Oh, but first, im going to get all this patina off of the block..

found some very very minor scoring on rod bearing mating surface on number one rod. my finger nail barely catches on the two lines. may just take some scotch bright to it and call it a day. not sure how professional that is... waiting for some mics to arrive in the mail so I can get some measurements. also may just run a ball hone through the cylinders and see how it turns out before I consider a machine shop. I want about 600WHP out of this build so I want it done right but also, not sure if any machining will be necessary. I mean, how long will the engine last with that amount of power anyway?

Yup. Mind made up. Light sandpaper to crank and ball hone them cylinders. This will be my first auto engine build. Can't wait! May even have a few beers to get the courage to order rods tonight!

Hello Nation,

I assume you are installing new pistons and rings?  What brand and type?

After honing the cylinders, what RA will you be looking at for the rings?

New Pistons, rods, bearings, gonna push 20-25 PSI through it.

Paradise aluminum rods, not sure on the Pistons yet. Still doing some research.  Either LCE or paradise though. At one point, Paradise seemed to focus only on the RZ platform so they may be the best bet all around. Gonna hone the cylinders once and check measurements and kinds go from there. Not sure on ring gaps yet. Going to do some more research and give Paradise and LC a call on Tuesday.
