5 to 1's or crawler?
« on: Apr 14, 2005, 06:38:18 PM »
Hey guys just wondering how you felt about 5 to 1's for my t-case. I want to put a crawler in it but I am having problems finding a top shift in my price range. Is there going to be more of a chance of something breakin or will I be fine? It is a 21 spline case, stock axle's, 4.10 gears and 35"s.

Dual cases will be lower (5.20:1 vs 4.97:1) and will be many many times stronger than the A/A "5.0" gears.

You will also appriciate not being stuck in super low when ever you are in 4WD. Having duals allows you to keep your stock gearing and have the option of being over twice as slow as you are now

though i do agree that duals are better in this application, but i'll play devil's advocate and ask has anybody ever thought of just using a higher gear in their tranny with a single case?  it's not like you're locked in 1st gear when in low range

With 33 inch tires, 4.88 gears, and 4.7 low range my truck runs about 19 mph at 4,000 rpm.  Most of the time it is OK, but the higher transmission gears are not always designed for the same amount of torque as the lower gears, espectially overdirve (5th).  Having a single 4.7 is way better than stock, but having more options would be better.

just so ya know, 4th is the stongest gear in the trans.

Well I got lucky and found a top shift t-case, so I am doing a dual setup. I really appreciate all the help.

if i'm not mistaken, the order of gear strength from strongest to weakest in a toy tranny is 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 5th, reverse.  with 4.7s in a single case, 4th gear low would essentially be a bit lower than 1st in high range.  no problems with gear spread IMHO, though having more options is never a bad thing!
