Hi all-

As I am planning my build I have realized time and time again that there is so much more to learn. I have come to the conclusion that I don't know enough about axles/housings/diffs to answer these questions on my own- so I'm turning to you all for some help.

I would like to run the Toyota E-lockers in both the front and rear of my 79 pickup. That being said, there are a couple of questions that I have:
1) Is this possible? (literally- can you use a rear diff for the front? does it matter?)
2) Has this been done before?
2) What modifications would need to be done to my axles to make these work?
3) Will the gears in the diffs need to be changed? (G52 dual case trans)

Thank you a bunch in advance  :D

1) Yes, it's possible. You can run standard pinion in the front or rear and keep hp on the front
2) Yes, been done many times before.
3) You'll need to notched and tap/drill
4) You can run whatever gear you like. Can't run hp gear in standard pinion setup
Going, going, gone

In my 85 Xtra-Cab I have a 99 Tacoma E locker in my front axle and an 04 4Runner E locker in my rear axle.
Did you ever sort out your e lockers?
I know this post is 3 plus months old but, I ain't been here for a while.

My rear switch motor is dead so I remove it to engage the rear locker.
Front locker is now cable actuated with a Chilkat cable shifter.
fasterspider, now older and slower.

Welcome back!

No, I never ended up deciding what to do regarding the e-locker situation. I have been busy working on my motor swap (which is now a 5vz instead of a 22re which was already replacing a 20r) so I haven't spent much time on the axles/lift side of my build yet. My friends brother is running a set of ARB air lockers on his rig- front and rear. I have heavily been considering this as an alternative so that I also have a way to air up/down my tires while on trail.

I will probably end up going with the e-lockers if I can find a good deal but in Oregon they are bought up fast and people want an absolute premium for them so IDK what I'm gonna do right now. I'll update this post as I get closer to my decision

Many folks will tell you arb is stronger than elocker and that is true. But everything have its downfall and the choice to run what is yours. I'm not a fan of using the air locker compressor to air up on the trail so I carry a power tank for that reason. Nothing can beat a power tank when airing up.

-arb:
Stronger
Faster locking mechanism
Require air for activation
Everyone I know, mine included leak air (very annoying to hear the compressor consistently engaged)

-elocker
Cheaper, can buy 2 complete elocker third for the price of 1 arb
If actuator have issue, you can still manually lock the diff on the trail
Limited to tire size (mostly stay 37 and under)
No compressor require, no extra switch in cab
Going, going, gone
