Rears leafs up front
« on: Jan 02, 2021, 11:14:36 AM »
What needs to be done to run rears up front. The front bushing in the rear leafs has a smaller ID that the factory front leafs.

 I think with the state of Pirate this ought to have an actual sticky thread on here

When I SAS my 4runner. I built a set of RUF. IIRC I used a 79 main leaf. The spring pin was offset the most on these particular year springs. I think i ended up with a 7 leave pack. I can check later on. Which after they where done pushed my front axle forward. Fit my 35s nicely. Rode like a cadillac. I've never had the common issue of rubbing on the firewall. I have since purchased SKYS 3F springs.. RUFs are a great economical solution in my opinion. Also let's you dial in height and softness. I think I followed Roger at 4crawler.

I have 6 leaf RUF on my 1980. First 3 are a 79-83 pack and the next 3 are a cut down/staggered 79-83 pack. I run these with bilstein 5125's and good progressive bump stops. I have been very happy with them, both on the street and the trail.

I used a 79-83 pack and an 86 pack on a 86 4runner and Its too soft, even after adding a 7th leaf. Not sure if it's the springs, shocks or what. I'm not happy with it but it's my Dads truck and so far he wont put up the $ to let me try and figure it out.

The reason I did RUF was I saw them working well for others, the price was right and I wanted to keep the lift to a minimum, no monster trucks for me. I also picked up a set of the Sky 3F springs for backup but I have no immediate plans to install them

How do the sky springs compare to the RUF for you?

I've no access to the early packs, so will be 88-96 rears mixed and matched, polished and tapered, painted and greased.
I need to order some leaf clips from rough country as well.

89-95 should be the longer 51" springs. I hear they take a bit more work, having to move the front hanger farther forward. I also hear they work really good, especially with 37"+ tires.

79-83 Toyota Rear
Flat length = 48"
Front Half = 21.125"
Rear Half = 26.875"
Width = 2.36"
Front Eyelet = 18mm ID
Rear Eyelet = 18mm ID
These are also said to have the most arc of all the toy rears.

84-88 Toyota Rear
Flat length = 48"
Front Half = 20.5"
Rear Half = 27.5"
Width = 2.36"
Front Eyelet = 14mm ID
Rear Eyelet = 18mm ID

89-95 Toyota Rear
Flat length = 51"
Front Half = 21.5"
Rear Half = 29.5"
Width = 2.36"
Front Eyelet = 14mm ID
Rear Eyelet = 18mm ID

The 06 on rears are 53" iirc and have very little arch. No good for the front but would work well for a rear application other than the one they were designed for.
Just a little random info for you there.
