Automatic Transmission for 85 Runner
« on: Dec 11, 2020, 10:30:51 AM »
I have an 85 4Runner with a factory automatic transmission.  However, the transmission in it is an A340 and that is not the correct transmission.  Mitchell says that it's an A43D, but I can't find anything confirming it.  I know that the original is not an A340 because both Mitchell and Toyota call for gear oil in the transfer case and the A340 has transmission fluid.

a) Can anyone shed any light on what transmission is the correct one?

b) Is the transfer case on whatever is the correct one just a standard Toyota gear driven case that I could put a doubler on?

Thanks.

This is from marlins sight..
https://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/transmission/transmission-gear-ratio-chart

I do not think that is correct.  The A340F has an integrated transfer case that uses transmission fluid, and both Mitchell and Toyota call for gear oil in the transfer case.  That is what is in the truck now, which I just had rebuilt and failed (out of warranty).  It is clearly the wrong transmission for the truck because the transmission mount is different.  Mitchell says that the transmission is an A43D, but all my research says that that is a 2wd transmission.  It's an incredibly rare truck that no one seems to know anything about.

I put the VIN in in Mitchell, but I haven't called Toyota.  I'll try that next.  If it's a gear driven case, I can't think of anything cooler than an 85 automatic with a doubler.

Just called Toyota and from what I can tell, it's an A43D with a gear driven case on it.  Marlin might want to update his document.

This forum is kinda janky.  I can't post pictures because the file size is too big, but I put a picture of my shifters in my profile.  I just finished a fresh engine rebuild when the transmission went out.  Stage 2 cam, LC Engineering header, flowmaster exhaust.  Also have a soft top for it and upgraded the brakes to '93 V6 calipers and FJ60 drilled and slotted rotors.  I own a mobile shop and I was working out of it, but I just bought and kinda beat up '93 V6 extra cab to work out of and keep the miles down on my Runner, which I want to resto mod, which is why it's so important to get the right transmission.

Look at the VIN plate in the door jam - it will tell you what came in it.

Are you the original owner?  My 86 87 and 88 4Runners all have chain driven transfer cases( that use ATF). A picture of the T-case would help identify  it .  This may also http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ scroll drown to transfer case

That's an A340F.  I have one of those in it right now and it doesn't fit right (specifically, the transfer case linkage hits the output flange on the transfer case.  I had to remove it).  The original transmission in the 85 is an A43D and has a regular gear driven, gear oil transfer case on it.  The original 85 transmission that I got out of Colorado is about 2 hours away right now being rebuilt or I'd post pictures.  I've checked with Toyota parts (I saw the schematic of the transfer case) and with the Mitchell ProDemand and I assure you, this is correct.  It's an extremely rare truck.  I used to work at Toyota and I currently own a shop.

Picture of the transfer case is on my profile.  Have no idea what it is.  I think it’s chain driven but idk.

My FSM says you should have an A43D and gear-drive transfercase.  All 4x4 Trucks and 4Runners are the same.  Rock on for period correct.   :twocents:
