Air intake pipe/tube???
« on: Oct 20, 2020, 09:30:36 PM »
So, I am getting ready to pull the turd, aka Kilchis in the shop and swap out motors.  And right before I lost the head gasket, I noticed my air intake tube, between AFM and Throttle body, was leaking air.  I see it was split where the clamp goes.  So, I am looking for options.  All I can find is LC Engineering's Pro Air Intake https://www.lceperformance.com/LC-Pro-Air-Intake-Tube-Kit-Only-22RE-85-87-p/1061501.htm and TG's version.  I refuse to use anything from TG! Is that my only options besides having one fabbed up at a muffler shop, or OEM?  I looked at swapping the battery, and AFM, but I just don't want to go that route right now.  Maybe later, if I ever do a battery relocation.

Use a section of an old motorcycle inner tube and some hose clamps over the cracked section to seal it up..................

Sorry, its not the rubber boots that I need, they are fine.  Its the plastic pipe in between them.  If you look at the link I provided in the OP, its the piping between them.  The one I have I bought off of here.

Go with the LC intake. Silicone ends and steel tube. Silicone will outlast the stock pieces and the steel won't crack or wear through. Not really a performance upgrade, but more piece of mind. I like mine anyway. Be sure to install it in a manner it has a decent gap between it and everything.
If you don't have to worry about emissions issues, relocating the airbox to the battery location is better. Avoiding the radiator heat and radiant heat from the exhaust is a good plus. Installing a divider to isolate the filter and box from the engine compartment and providing a route to outside air makes the mod a true "cold air" intake.
Using plastic plumbing pipe is a terrible way to go, use aluminum tube and bends instead.
Either way, some heat barrier helps out. I bought cheap gold colored barrier fabric (cheapo ebay stuff) and it help out a bit. If you can get the Basalt fabric type it's better.
Brought to you by the WBC (World Billionaire's Club) because money is a bad thing. Let us carry that burden for you.

Sure it'll fit........ Just needs a little brute finesse.

Sure I believe intelligent life exists on other planets. Other planets, not this one.

I am just perfectly happy with the factory setup.  I live in a very wet area during the winter months, and I have a car that has a cold air intake, and it is not fond of the rainy season.  The engine just runs a little different.  And the factory setup pulls from the headlight bucket anyway, so its not gonna pull from the engine compartment.

But with the motor I plan on putting in, has been worked over, and may like the AFM moved over to the battery location.  But that will be later down the road.  The truck needs to be running first!!!
