Falls on its face in 3rd gear
« on: Sep 18, 2020, 11:25:22 PM »
I have an 84 custom cab 4x4 with the 22r and 5 speed does fine all the way up to about 35 and when I shift into fourth gear it just boggs down.  It'll hit 50 downhill but on flat land just doesn't want to accelerate. Any idea why?

Welcome to the forum.  :welcome:

Yes.  I have an idea.

Before I speculate, postulate, indicate, miscalculate, insinuate, recapitulate, intimate, interpolate, inarticulate, mentally masturbate, and then congratulate, can you provide a little information about the vehicle and the engine?  :dunno:

Are you shifting into 4th gear at 35, if so, that is part of your problem, shouldn't be shifting into forth until about 45-50, or about 4k rpms.

What size tires are on it, stock is 225.

Something else to consider, is the Toyota 4x4 stock '84 4x4 is a heavy rig being drug around By a sub 100hp to the rear wheels engine to begin with, the extended frame and custom cab only increased the amount of weight.  Even at optimum engine performance, it is going to be a show rig.
