Radiator for 1989 Toyota Truck 22re 4x4 5spd
« on: Aug 15, 2020, 12:12:25 PM »
I have 1989 Toyota Truck 22re 4x4 5spd that runs hot after hot after a highway run.  You can hear that the water is hot and boils over into the catch can.  In the city with AC running, it will run about 3/4 after a long drive.

The engine idles and runs smoothly throughout the operation range.

What I've done are:
Set the timing
Check the plug gaps
Adjusted the rockers
flushed the engine
Replaced the pump
Replaced the cooling hoses
Checked for vacuum leaks - none
I have installed a OEM head gasket and had the head refurbished at local machine shop

So, I'm thinking it could be the radiator.  I checked the radiator while it was hot and there were areas on the cooling fins that were spots on the radiator where it was much cooler...? :inthedark:

I see the ongoing discussions about all metal (brass/copper)  vs Aluminum (plastic/aluminum)

I am looking at going with stock but BIG$$$ vs Aluminum $$

Therefore, I am looking for suggestions on what radiator to use ???

Thanks

I'm running a aluminum/plastic radiator with zero cooling issues.

Regarding possible overheating causes, have you ruled out the t-stat?
