WTB: Used Axle Front Shafts
« on: Jul 11, 2020, 02:56:42 PM »
During front axle rebuild for SAS I noticed my drivers side birfield does not move freely.  I believe its corroded while sitting unused for so long.  Passenger side appears okay.  Hoping someone has some left over from an upgrade.

Depending on condition and cost I’m debating on the idea of just upgrading to new.  Open to thoughts on that.  It is a DD and while it won’t be used that hard I want to keep it capable.

Thanks all
~Josh

RCV is the best axles you could install:

https://www.rcvperformance.com/ultimate-30-spline-cv-axle-set-for-toyota-pickup-79-85-4runner-84-85.html

If you go off road and ever worry about breaking an axle this would eliminate that concern.

I would also expect the axles that Marlin sells to be a quality product though not an equal:

https://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-shafts/shafts-front-hilux/chromoly-30-spline-axle-kit

The difference is probably around $200, so if you need upgraded axles why not go RVC?

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

Valid Point.  I did research and found out that same thing.  I’d love to throw all the parts at it and make it bulletproof but my wallet is already hurting with this SAS with some unexpected costs so I’d like to wait on an axle upgrade if possible.  I don’t plan to wheel it that hard.   I do have a front lunchbox but only 33’s, 4.88’s, and stock case so i should be okay.

Thoughts on the marlin 27 spline birfs?  And would it be dumb to get only one?

any chance you know somebody in the north bay area?
I've got a stock set laying around but shipping could be a deal breaker.
i never seem to have/make time for that.

ask my Mom who's been waiting for literally months on a box from me  :gap:

When it comes to axle longevity:

(1) Lunchbox Locker = bad
(2) 33s = good
(3) 4.88s = good
(4) stock case = bad (if you're actually wheeling it hard)

If you stay off the rocks and wheel smart you can probably survive with the front locker.  I ran Moab with 33s and a front limited-slip, but I did have 4.70 t-case gearing.

If you can get a stock replacement cheap, that's what I'd suggest.

@OVRAROK, thanks for the offer but I ended up going with RCV.  Thought it best since I have a bunch of time and money into the axle already.

@blackdiamond, thanks for the input and help pushing me in the direction I’m sure I won’t regret.
