Topic: 2 Owner 2000 4Runner

Back again but no longer in Puerto Frito. This is my newly acquired daily purchased from the original owner. 2000 4Runner SR5 (bought in ‘99), automatic, 3.4, 4wd, 180,xxx miles, $3800. Previous owner was an older gentleman from Berea, KY who mostly used it for yard maintenance so it needs a little bit of love. Timing belt, water pump, and radiator replaced at 150,xxxx. The only pics I’ve taken so far are from maintenance, I’ll get a few more of the exterior sometime.

Here is a nice rusty rear diff with two small pinholes that I noticed after I got it home. It was dry when I transferred the title. Probably the highway speeds that finally pushed the oil through.



Temporary holiday weekend patch. Gonna wait until the morning to refill with oil.

Passenger rear shock was completely disconnected due to rust. Rubber bushings MIA.

Passenger sway bar link disconnected due to rust and incredibly seized nut.

JB Weld held up nicely on the river/creek romp today. Once that fails I'll try and find someone willing to spot weld it. Ride is way different now that the rear passenger shock and front sway bar link are connected! I fought the sway bar link nut for a while but it wouldn't budge so out came the hacksaw. A little dremel would have been perfect.

Rear diff drank a whole 3qts of 80-90 and still didn't spill out of the fill hole but it was within the 5mm finger dip.

Rockauto LBJ

After replacing the two, my steering wheel is tilted to the right and steers horribly. I replaced drivers side first with one wheel off the ground at a time.

Nice 4Runner!! Looking forward to seeing more of your repairs on it. I also have a 3rd gen., so definitely enjoy seeing them getting the attention they deserve.

It is a great vehicle. I did however slightly screw up the driver side LBJ by stripping the threads of one of the four bolts that hold it to the knuckle. It still hasn’t fallen out despite being able to be turned by hand, I used blue loctite and have been driving it around for some time just avoiding long highway trips until I try tapping for a heli-coil.

Upcoming maintenance items include o2 sensors (more fighting with rust), valve cover gasket, wheel cylinder/brake shoes, oil change, and eventually it will need a new rear main seal.

Also thinking about removing the side steps boards, they’re pretty useless for me at the moment and I feel it will look less like a soccer mom rig

Really glad I decided to go back over this job and recheck torque on the manifold as I was experiencing high idling after buttoning it all up last night. Those that have done this job know about the driver side wire harness protected by very brittle plastic. A piece found its way through the intake and was resting against a valve. It rode there for about 15 miles somehow. After pulling that out I re-torqued everything and it is idling around 750. I also removed the brittle plastic and wrapped the wires in conduit and tape. Now the oil leaks are localized to the bottom half of the engine and I can drive with the windows down without smelling oil burning on the exhaust manifold
