Transmission ID
« on: May 07, 2020, 02:36:31 PM »
Hello.  I picked up a '91 or '92 Truck 5 speed transmission w t/case off Craigslist.  I don't have the VIN, but the seller thought the Truck it came off was a 91' or 92'.  It does have a gear t/case.  It also has 6 bolts holding the top shifter and the t-case shifter in the same pocket.  I checked the front transmission bearing retainer and it has 7 bolts.  Does that make this transmission a W series?  If it was a G58, the input bearing retainer would have 8 bolts and the shifter retainer would have 4 bolts and the t/case would be chain instead of gears, right?  I guess the next thing to do is pull the input bearing retainer and look to see what bearing is in it.  If it's a W 56 C (89-91) the bearing will be 6307-N, HR6307-N,  if it's a W 56 D (92) the bearing will be 35TM11UR, 35TM11NX1.  I took some pictures, but I don't think I can post them up yet.  Off Marlin's transmission page, it looks like a W 56D.  Just trying to get it right and I guess I could use some help.

If your transmission has a 6 bolt shifter base retaining both shifters, that will either be a W-56 C, D, or E. You can narrow it down based off of the year, but if you do not have that information, you can differentiate based off of the breather vent. The C will have no breather, the D and E will have a breather between the shifters. I hope this helps!

Thank you!  I will check it out.  I saw Marlin isn't offering the rebuild kit anymore.  Do you have a good place offering the good Japanese bearings and synchros?  I saw in some kits the sychros are terrible quality.  Thanks again for your help.

On the shifter cover, in between the middle bolts, there is a breather - I took a picture of it, but still can't post pictures.  So that makes it either a D or an E.  I saw on the transmission ID info page, if it's a D, the input bearing will either be a 35TM11UR or 35TM11NX1.  So, if it's not one of those two, does that make it an E?  Thanks again!
