Teasley Family Diesel 4runner
« on: Apr 17, 2020, 01:06:49 PM »
Finally getting around to starting a build thread for the family crawler ive been slowly working on the last 2-3 years.

The build started with a trade.

i had built a 4ft x 4 ft  cnc  plasma table and had listed it on craigslist for sale or trade, a guy sent me a message and some pics of a 1990 4runner with a straight axle and diesel motor.

The plan at first was to fix it up a little and sell it to make some money.

stock r150 trans and chain transfer case
diamond front axle with high pinion 4:56 open diff

So the build started for my right after.

First thing i wanted to take care of was the mechanical injection, i wanted to put all the electronics back on the motor so i could hook up a computer and see what was going on with it.

The motor also had an upgraded turbo and injectors so i wanted to get a custom tune for the ecu so i could get as much horsepower power out of the little 1.9 diesel engine (this engine is a little tiny thing).

So i ended up buying an whole 2001 jetta so i could steal all the electronic and wiring to convert the motor back.
after getting all the wiring and injection pump off the donor car (11mm injection pump from an automatic trans car, which means more fuel for the bigger injectors and turbo), i sent all the wiring to a company back east to have them make a clean harness to use in the toyota.

Also ordered and stage 5 custom tune form malone tuning for the ecu.

So when its all said and done the little 1.9 turbo motor that has about 100hp stock is now around 200hp and blows black smoke if you get on the skinny pedal just a little.

I wish i had taken more pics along the way with the build.

The next thing i did:

I hate the color red so i bought a grey roller with a complete interior and a SUNROOF, and did a body swap.

Got rid of the little 285 tires and bought some km2 tires and rims new.

sold the km2s bought some new km3 35" tires.

Got Rid of the Rear trail gear bumper thing
Bought and nice home built bumper from a guy in Modesto

Did some clean up on the front axle

Added six shooter knuckles

In the process of building a new front diff with 4:56 and arb Locker.

And I know the front spring hanger weld job needs some help

Wasn’t sure if I wanted to use the stock gauges so I found a company that you can build your own gauges with,

Intellitronix gauge kit

Only problem right now is the gas gauge reads backwards so it reads empty when it’s full and full when empty.
I’ve contracted the company and they said they should be able to make a gauge for me that will work.

That steering looks kinda sketch with the lil tabs. Not sure i would trust that long term

All the brackets are cut from 1/4” plate, I’m trying to come up with something better but the Vw motor is a lot taller then toyota motors

Transmission and transfer cases week

I’ve had dual Cases sitting in my garage for almost 2 years finally took them apart found a couple small parts missing, ordered them up. Cleaned all the dirt and grease off and painted them.

I also picked up a R150 Transmission from A 1996+ tacoma from a guy locally that had installed the higher 5th gear for better rpm on the freeway.
But to use the transmission I had to completely take it apart to swap out the input shaft for 3.0l input and bell housing,
Also swapped the tail housing because I already had the transfer case adapter for the 3.0l also.

In the middle of getting everything back together.

Ordering a new marlin clutch.

Picked up a truck with some 15” trailready beadlocks so I switched those to my truck.
Still need to clean them up and new hardware will be here in a couple days.

That steering will fail pretty quick especially off road. You are going to need to want to do low steer compared to that steering

4x4labs used to make steering arms that put the tie rod behind the axle and drag link on the front hole. apparently they dont make it anymore. i thought it was a slick design.

I’ve been looking at my steering a lot lately I think I’ve come up with a solution, there’s a oil pan that will give me alittle more clearance, then if I redo the motor mounts (which need to be redone any ways), I should be able to move the engine up a little over and inch then there should be enough clearance for straight drag link again.
