Check for a bad cam chain guide before you get too far into changing the rockers as the slapping chain will sometimes mimic rocker noise.  Those plastic guides are problematic.  Front cover must come off to replace, but looking down from the cam gear and moving the guide lightly back and forth against the cam chain, any movement, replacement time.  Get Metal replacements.   :twocents:

Hi mountain,man1.....

You started posting here January last year.

You have asked a lot of questions and said what you are going to do to your 4Runner.

I'm just curious, what have you done to your 4Runner since January of 2019? :dunno:

I redid the top end 4 years ago But was under a deadline from the state of Colorado to get emissions and VIN check so I cut some corners. I know it's the rocker arms because when I did everything I put all new timing chain sprockets guides the work

Hi mountain,man1.....

I moved it around a little bit. She still runs. She just don't sound happy. I did some wiring that needs to be done. Ive been working on the crappy crx trying to keep it going.

So the head has to come off. I have less than 20,000 miles on the timing chain kit Can it be reused?

I redid the top end 4 years ago But was under a deadline from the state of Colorado to get emissions and VIN check so I cut some corners. I know it's the rocker arms because when I did everything I put all new timing chain sprockets guides the work

So you are driving that vehicle less than 5,000 per year, or 13 miles a day.

How many times in the less than 20,000 miles did you check and adjust the valve lash?

When you “redid the top end”, what did you do?  What parts, other than the timing chain kit, were replaced?

The top end typically means the head/valves, camshaft, and rocker rack.

What corners did you cut?

How many miles was on the engine when you redid the top end 4 years ago.

The rocker rack with camshaft can be swapped without removing the head.

Exactly why do you feel confident the “terrible rocker arm knock” is the rockers?

I drive a company truck everyday so i don't put much miles on my own vehicles. The odometer read 237,000 when i had the head planed and resurfaced i put in a new timing kit (cover, chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets, water & oil pumps) and all new gaskets and seals for the whole motor the odometer currently reads 254,796

Are you sure you haven't wiped out a cam lobe?

It's possible to reassemble the rocker shafts wrong and not get enough oil up top...………………..

Hey mountain,man1….

Trying to analyze a noise over the internet is like sniffing flowers through your butt.  :inthedark:

I’m asking questions to try to figure out where the “terrible rocker arm knock” is coming from.  Based upon the limited information I’ve read so far, I would be pulling a Wild A$$ Guess out of my butt. There is a HUGE range of conditions a high mileage 22RE can be in.  And many definitions of a “rebuild”.  :dunno:

I’ll let someone else with more experience than I have, or a crystal ball, comment.

Good luck.  :beerchug:

Rocker bores worn oval, causes a "swinging" motion to the rocker making it impossible to get them adjusted properly. All it takes is a few moments of oil starvation or foreign material in the oil, like metal shavings or sludge to block the oil port. Yep, head comes off. Prepare yourswlf to replace the cam and rockers. Be sure to mikke the rocker shafts as well, they can wear enought to cause problems with new rockers.

Since you're there, replace the valve seals as well.

Sure it'll fit........ Just needs a little brute finesse.
