Need help identifying this part
« on: Jan 20, 2020, 12:03:25 PM »
So the blower motor in my 82 pickup went out. Should be a simple fix, right? Wrong. I have been to every single auto parts store in the area, a toyota dealership, the local wreckers, and even reached out to a toyota specific wrecker looking for a replacement heater blower motor for my 82 pickup. The main issue I keep running into is the flange size on the replacement motors is too large.

As far as I can tell, this is the OEM motor. I was able to plug in one of the new replacements from the auto parts store to verify that the OEM motor is in fact bad. Unfortunately, as stated before, I cant bolt ANY of the replacements up because the flange sizes are all too big. This truck has AC (and yes I have tried both AC versions and non). There is a number printed on the motor itself but a google search produces a blower motor for a 1981 toyota starlet as well as a number of listings for the same blower motor I have on japanese websites that I cant read. When I look for a aftermarket replacement motor for a toyota starlet, I get the same large flange version that wont fit my truck.

In my digging, I read in a marlin thread that there are a number of different ventilation configurations in the early year pickups where some of the trucks were plumbed to defrost the side windows to allow a person to see the side mirrors, and some were not. Mine does have the extra ventilation plumbing. So im wondering there is a heavy/light duty distinction for these motors?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Im stumped!

I tried that. The closest I could come up with was 162500-0101 which is close, but not the same. It doesn't have the right plug, either. It looked eerily similar to the oversized units ive been getting locally, also.  :hammerhead:

If somebody is feeling really generous (and for my own sanity) id love it if someone with a first gen pickup could take a photo of their blower motor. it almost seems as if I have a different style flanging on my heater unit from other pickups. I cant figure out why else it would be so difficult to find a replacement....

Is it possible your old motor just needs brushes?
If they’re worn and they’re 4x4x10mm I’m waiting on 10 to arrive in the next week or so. (For my window motors)
I can send you a pair if needed.

What’s the model#? It’s on the plate against the firewall under the hood, or sometimes on the inner fender.
Something configured like RN34L-MDA. The reason I ask is I could get a feel if the AC was factory or dealer installed. In theory they should be the same, but I remember dealing with a Tercel That needed a  AC repair that gave us fits in the Parts dept trying to get a matching part. And Denso numbers weren’t much use, Toyota rarely referenced them anywhere in their microfiche or PANT bulletins.
It was very common to get Toyota’s back then without AC, and installing it at the time of sale if the customer wanted it.

After some extensive searching (and with the help of a gentleman on the yotatech forums), ive gathered (based on my VIN) that the toyota part number is likely (87104-95401). There were three blower motor configs for the 82' pickup. I narrowed it down to 87104-95401, and 87104-95403. I believe its the former based on the appearance of the motor itself on toyotas schematic drawing of the heater unit assembly drawings.

an important note: all three motor configurations are discontinued.

At this point, I am unsure how to cross reference the toyota PN to an aftermarket part number. all google searches have produced little help and zero useful photos. any ideas on how to tackle this are much appreciated.

And thanks to all who have offered up their ideas an suggestions up to this point.

That is an interesting point about the addition of AC after the fact. The model number is RN48L-MSA

The model number verifies that your truck was built as a SR5, so a/c should have been installed prior to arriving at the dealer.
Here's the info I'm struggling with regarding the choices Toyota shows. They have two different motors, depending on a/c or not. But the felt packing used as a gasket is the same for either one. So is the squirrel cage and the heater box it goes into. So I'm thinking that the actual dimensions of the motors are the same, just one might have a stronger motor for a/c. In other words, i'd think either would fit. Wiring connectors may differ, but it would seem both should at least bolt up.
The 95 in the part number is unusual. I'd be fairly certain that originally that would have been 87104-89xxx. 89 was the designation used for a truck part.
