What Toyota diff is strongest in the front?
« on: Jan 10, 2020, 05:02:47 PM »
Alright Submit your opinions. What is the stronger of the front diffs?

Landcruiser reverse rotation 8" because it drives on the stronger side of the ring gear when used in the front
or
Landcruiser  9.5" the greater ring gear diameter improves the leverage advantage and reduces the risk of breaking teeth.
or
Toyota minitruck 8" V6 housing... I dont know why but maybe you just like them. These are the options discussed in this question lets try to avoid going down the path of discussing Dana, Corporate or Rockwell housings keep in mind I'm build a daily driven Toyota not a 800 HP comp buggy with 21/2 ton truck axles under it. This thing needs to go down the road without enough unsprung weight to crush the Prius in front of me wiithout knowing anything happened.

I think the 9.5 is prolly stronger but I would rather run the hp 8 inch. Keeps the drive shaft out of the way helps with pinion angle and will be plenty strong.

I personally believe the hi-pinion 8” is the best option.
Add an air locker and a quality set of reverse cut gears and your in great shape.
This is what I run and what I plan to put in my boys front axles.

.. keep in mind I'm build a daily driven Toyota not a 800 HP comp buggy …

I’m sure the actual “strength” of one diff over another can be determined.

However… in all my years of wheeling Toyota trucks and witnessing 100’s of trail runs with other types of 4x4s, it was not very often to have a discussion about frequent premature diff failure in a typical properly set up 4-wheeler.

In other words, Toyota differentials are known to be very strong!

My vote is on the lc 9.5. We ran one in a ftoy style rig with a turbocharged 383 stroker making about 450hp. Beat the tar out of it with 38.5 boggers on steel h1 deadlocks rockbouncing the thing. The axle and buggy are still running around today and we built it 11 years ago.

did the rig have the 9.5 diffs in the front and rear? I have no doubts that one would do well running in the rear my question is why would Toyota switch from the 9.5 in the front of the 40 and 60 series cruisers to the 8" high pinion in the 80 series? Did they do it just for the clearance or was there a strength advantage as well?

Just in the front. The rear was a ford 9" just because it was laying around and didnt cost anything.
