No overdrive when it is cold outside
« on: Nov 28, 2019, 07:25:42 PM »
I have a 1991 4runner 3.0 auto 4x4.  When the outdoor temp is below 50-55F  my 4runner does not warm up enough to go into overdrive.  I have a new OEM thermostat that I believe is an 88C temp on it.  Also have new solenoids filter and fluid in trans due to one of them not working.  The coolant is a 50/50 mix and new with stat.  This thing runs just fine when it is warm outside.  I can leave it running in the morning to warm up for 30 minutes and that makes no difference.  I drive mostly highway.  I did notice that if I drive around in the city it will shift just fine due to  stop and go traffic.  If it does warm up enough on the highway to shift into overdrive it will come out of overdrive as soon as the thermostat cycles.  The heater works just fine as well.  The only thing that leaks on this truck is the steering box and the sunroof.

Thank you for your time

The trans won't shift into OD until a signal from the engine temp sends the right temperature to the tranny sensor.

All my Toyota's with automatic trans did that.  If your engine is at normal operating temp, then I'd guess the temp sensor is not being sent to the tranny, or the tranny sensor is defective.  Or maybe there's a loose wire somewhere.

That's just a wild guess.  :dunno:
