Who has one in their truck?  Which one?  If I move to Oregon I think I'll need one.  I'm only familiar with Corvallis and some of Portland.

GPS came standard on all 4x4 Toyotas in the '80s. Decide on a point on the globe that you wish to reach. Drive your unstoppable Toyota towards it until you get there. Congratulations, your Global Positioning System has positioned you on the globe where you wanted to be. :gap:

Any garmin product is pretty good. I use my Alpha 100 which is actually a dog tracking system. But it marks everything and has all kind of features. Its extremely useful. Not to mention. Its handheld.

I figured on Garmin.  Wasn't sure about handheld.  If it had a mount that would enable me to when driving and then remove it to mobile that would be ideal.

There is a subscription required is that correct?

I have no subscription. Mine is expandable to a larger display. I would bet just about all of their handhelds are.

redneckcustoms, what model do you have?  I was looking at Garmin's site but don't know what features I want or need.
Hand held and mountable in my truck.  Waterproof.  That's all I have so far.

I've never used one and have no clue.

I have an alpha 100. It is currently and has been for the last few years the top of the line tracking system. You dont need the exact model I have if you arent dog hunting. But I'm sure they make a handheld similar to it that is simply for topo maps and tracking yourself. I will do some digging for you tomorrow if I get a break at work. I've been wheeling all weekend and just got cell service.

This looks like a good bargain. I cannot tell if its expandable to a larger display, but a call to garmin may answer that.

I'll ask,   why don't you want to use your phone?

Does Garmin have trails on it?

Compared price, features and size.  Hated the tiny screens and inflated prices on the dedicated GPS units.  I went with GAIA GPS.  You can create, save, and share routes and easily download them from the GIA Website to a tablet or phone.  It is free but I pay about $10 a year to get their premium maps.  I bought a $179 7.5 inch Android tablet, added a Bluetooth Garmin Glo GPS for $99 and got a Ram Mount for the works.  Now I have a large touch screen that I can see with multiple map overlays I can switch between.  All the maps download to the tablet very easily so no connection is needed on the trail.  Easier to find and plan or save routes, cheaper than a dedicated GPS, easier to see in the truck and much more user friendly!  It has been a winner for me.
