Just buy an adapter to the gear driven tcase. That's what I have in my 83.

Agree.
Youre money ahead and have actual parts availability for repairs.
You dont really want hens teeth parts on an off road rig.
hold this. . .

I can completely understand you wanting to run factory parts,  some folks dont understand but in reality they generally have less parts to fail, less potential for leaks, less issues, are cleaner and it has that factory look that many like.  Also the likely hood of a r151f rear case half section failing in zero to none.  I have seen the back half sections sell for over $400 though.  So it comes down to what it is worth to you.  For me I almost always run the r151f transmission as a whole,  just like now in my first gen.

Would you be afraid to install a used R151 condition unknow? If you came across one? Would the odds be in favor that the 151 is still good

Myself personally I would pull the transmission cases and inspect before installing.  It takes about 10 minutes to pull the cases of the transmission and is super easy.  My biggest concern of random transmissions that have run in a long time is rust damage on the Inside.  It is very common. Especially if they were in a wheeler to have a little water in them or if they were left uncovered with the shifters out.
