3.4 rebuild cost
« on: Oct 16, 2019, 07:37:39 PM »
Iím getting ready to do my engine swap 3.4 and a manual tranny into my samurai but was wanting to rebuild the engine before I stick it in the car. What are the costs and what should I upgrade while I have it out? The engine has 29865 miles but sounds strong and starts right up. Iím in SoCal if anyone has a good contact as an engine builder.

curious where you bought the engine?  I sold one a while back to a fella down south, he was putting it in a samurai,  sorry to derail your question.

Bought a whole 4runner in Bishop CA. Itís hard as hell to find a 3.4 motor with a manual Tranny in SoCal.

got ya, well to help with your question.
timing kit, along with the fan bracket assembly
fan clutch
oil cooler on side of block, replace seals and use oem seals
while its out replace the knock sensors under the plenium/intake, sometimes the wires are dried and cracked out as well
and these do have a tendency to get seeping headgaskets around 200,000+, however Id wait and run it and handle it if it ever comes

Thanks for the advice Iím tempted to do just slap it in. Last time I did the engine swap in the samurai I did the head timing belt and most of the accessory's and it has been good to me. I kind of want to be cheap on this one and see what I can get away with.

That's a solid motor.  I never did anything except change oil and top off fluids in mine.  190,000 miles before I lost it a flood.

Maybe do a compression test?
