BestGen's 4th Gen build page. I call Her "4chan"
« on: Oct 12, 2019, 10:11:16 AM »
So I scored a 4th gen for $600, Woot Woot. I have always liked this body style of 4runner. I've never been a big fan of the 3rd gen and the 2nd is well, a huge mistake of a vehicle :puke: .
Plan is for it to be My Dailey driver/ overland poser. I want it to look like a full on rock crawler that never leaves the pavement. I'm sure I will take it out at some point on an easy level trail or two but for now it's maintenance and maybe a lift kit. Of course it has a brand new set of Michelin tires on it (2 weeks old).
So tires won't be coming anytime soon.
The reason I got it for so Cheap You ask? Well the previous owner drove it until the water pump completely failed, all the coolant leaked out, and then drove it home. It sounded horrible and had misfire codes, cat codes, evap codes, and no ability to hold coolant.
You could add coolant and it would poor right out the water pump bearings. I had about a 99% confidence that the headgaskets had been damaged or the engine would be hurt. I took the gamble with full expectation of replacing the engine with a used motor.

Drove the BBC down with the trailer and loaded her up. I picked up a new water pump and figured what the heck Let's see what happens. Carson put it on for Me to gain some additional experience and I hooked him up with pizza as payment.
Well two short road tests and no issues yet. It hasn't used any coolant and runs sweet. I know there will be issues as I drive it, heck it's got 220k on the clock. Things are going to come up, But at this point I'm just so excited to have it. Did I mention it's a Limited with all the option except for a V8.

They look good, I need to take some measurements to be sure they will fit on the hood properly.
50 miles of driving after water pump replacement and no sign of a head gasket leak yet. Going to take Her threw the emissions test on Wednesday.

You have to fool with a lot more of them than I do, but I haven't seen a head gasket fail on a 1gr. How many have you dealt with?

I have replaced a few, all at high mileage like this 4runner. The shop has had several come threw with headgasket failures, again all with over 150k most close or over 200k. So far all have been repaired with headgaskets and rebuild the heads. no cracks, warped block, or heads. It's a huge job, the last one I did payed 28hrs not counting the head rebuilding. Most people go the route of trade in or junk yard at that cost. It's a two day job then good as new for me so I'm not scared if it happens. This engine runs really well at this point so I would just replace the headgaskets and rebuild the heads as apposed to engine replacement.

Knocking on 370k in my 06. Never had a waterpump. Only thing changed was battery and spark plugs. Even has original starter.

Hey redneckcustoms13,

Could your high mileage reliability be attributed to a conservative non-abusive driving style, a diligent periodic maintenance and conscience tuning practice, AND Toyota's legendary quality?

Why do you think you have gotten almost 370,000 miles with only minimal repair/replacements?

Not to hijack BGens thread, but it is a good inquiry gnarls so here goes.

The truck was owned by a marine parts company. The had 5 2006 Tacoma prerunners. The trucks commuted between Texas and south Florida hauling parts and often empty new boat trailers. All maintenance was performed by dealers with a nice portfolio of receipts/records kept in the vehicle. They all got traded in at a local dealer a friend worked for. Relatively the same miles on them all 225-265k. He picked this one due to having the most options. He drove it like a bat out of hell. Wide open everywhere he went. When I say he couldnt not have possibly been harder on it I mean it. He completed abused it. I got it and immediately put some spindles on it to lift it and atleast make it look better. I have since swapped the 3.73 gear for a 4.30. And use it as a daily driver in the evenings when I get home. I have taken it to ky, Tennessee, north Carolina, Texas and all places in between. I absolutely love this thing and it has served me well. I do oil changes at 5k. Trans got done when he got it and hasnt been fooled with since. I drive it nicely but sometimes have to get on it to pass someone when I'm towing a boat or car hauler.

Oh that's easy. He's got that far with only minor repairs because nothing major has broken or worn out yet :gap:

Just hit 100 miles since water pump replacement. Zero coolant usage and no misfires. I wasn't able to take her threw the emisions test yet. I have to much stuff to get ready for hunting this weekend. I will try again next Wednesday.
Once I finish off this tank of fuel I will start on the maintenance it needs. Or should I say Carson will (In training).
Looking into what Tech school to send him to. So far it's Green river (general tech program) or Shoreline (Toyota specific).

Passed emissions test. New Tabs and plates. Had Carson install a new belt and tensioner pulley bearing.
Got a new Master key cut and programmed. Also a new fob. 250 miles with no issues still  :crossed:
Next up oil change and full vehicle inspection.

There should be a new section in this forum called routine maintenance and repair.  And instead of magic turtles it will have hand emojis that gives pats on the back.

I'm half way finished with the second tank of fuel. Sounds like the rear brakes are metal to metal.
Going to change the oil and take a look after work today.
Had Carson replace the spark plugs for Me. He did well, Even noticed that the rear plug on the drivers side was not tightened and has cooked the coil a bit. I am going to see if I can turn up a used coil to replace it with.
I replaced a couple of the bulbs for the heater control display only to remember why We only replace all the bulbs at work. I replaced three and two more went out, replaced those two and one more went bad.  :hammer:
Next time I will try not to go cheap and just replace them all.

Well that is a sign of some maintenance atleast. I'm sure you know this already, but many if not all 1gr engines originally had ngk down one side and denso on the other.

Yep 3.4L and 4.0L. I don't think the 3.0L or the new v6
Oil change last night and brake inspection. Looks like I am going to need front calipers, rotors, pads, and shims.
Oh and the rear is metal to metal, so rear rotors, pads, and shim kit. Hopefully not rear calipers too.  She's parked until I have all the parts and Carson has time to do the work. Back to rolling the Corolla for a while.
