Urm... no its Umm. Yet another build fell on its ass.
« on: Aug 06, 2019, 03:59:25 PM »
Ive been trying to get this truck for over 12 months, before Landrover and before the Jeep before the Land Rover and finally its happening.
This picture was taken 9 yrs ago when i fitted the transmission mounts and fiddled with its undercarriage. It then disappeared into the ether, dry stored in a barn where the engine was stolen out of it. Ive not seen it yet, so it could be fuckered but it needs to be moved before the end August.
Current spec:
Land Rover 21spl axles 3.50:1 2 pinion diffs.
Land Rover R380 5spd manual.
Land Rover LT230 1:1 hi range transfer case.
Was a Land Rover 300tdi 120hp 4cyl diesel.

It originally came with peugeot drivetrain and Dana axles but the less said about that the better.

Have found a 200tdi diesel to replace the missing 300. Same thing just slightly different.
Might smash it together and use it.. said no one ever.

The construction is remarkably simple, box section frame, sheet steel and i mean sheet steel body panels. The only thing press formed is the roof.

Wheelbase is 100 inches. Current track width is 58ins.
I will measure approach and departure angles which will change any how.

Current plan is to take the roof and side panels off, get a canvas top made
and put a roll cage on it that extends to the rear thus allowing me the ability to bolt the roof tent to the top of it; Overlanding Bro!.  Doors will come off and be changed for tube doors. Fenders will be trimmed for 37's or 40's
Front frame will be modified to remove the spring hangers as will the rear..
Axles will get stuffed under someones series 3.
Steering box will get junked for probably a LHD JK unit with power steering
Transfer will be swapped for a Defender unit with a 1.41:1 hi range (low is the same across the board 3.32:1)
As for axles im tempted with 9", ive been offered a pair of 40, 60 and 80 series cruiser axles but dont know if i can be arsed with the hassle.
Wheels will be Pro Comp Steels of the $79.95 variety.
Will get the usual bollocks like winch and cb an hi lift and stuff.

It is a 1985 UMM Transcat 4x4. Manufactured in Portugal, registered '85
The Transcat 4x4 was made between '79-'84, so im assuming this was one of the last ones made or imported. According to howmanyleft.co.uk there are only 102 UMM's of any sort left in the UK, except this one makes it 103 as it hasnt had *tags* for 18 years.
so this is essentially an historic vehicle... that im going to cut up.
Ive been looking forward to a fab project or at least something i can take at with a plasma torch without effecting the heritage and resale value, now i have two but that could be another thread.

And yes, i know you think its ugly but i dont care for your vanity, lets face it anything looks beautiful with Trepadors or Boggers

oh,
Edit: She comes for free or barter which are essentially the same thing's. (insert misogynistic joke here)

Those must be some mighty big pack rats you guts have over their to haul off a whole engine. :gap:

It's certainly different, but not too fugly, a bullbar bumper and a snorkel would help with the front, some of what The slant to the fenders is what hurts its lines, the designer must of started hitting the Port wine early the day he designed them, or were afraid of being sued bu Land Rover.  Did any of them have their lights mounted on top of the fenders, or all on the bumper like that?

The engine gone thing is relative, apparently thats just Rob and you have to accept that.
The later models had the lights built into the grille. Im thinking with this one of fabricating some steel pods and adding them to the top of the fenders to get them up and out of harms way, may even use 6x4 Trucklites to keep the profile low and use a 54" lightbar as the hi beam.
Originally the UMM Cournil was based on the Jeep as UMM in their early years were importers and assemblers of the Hotchkiss Jeep and the Cournil then the Trans Cat were a natural progression.
The transmission style is very Jeep, Dana everything... albeit powered by French farts.

Been looking in the Land Rover bolt on shite catalogue today and GKN still manufacture a bolt in overdrive for the LT230 trans case, so this will make hooning down the highway at 70 much more pleasant than the 50 they usually top out at. The R380 has drillings and a bypass tube bolted to the side of it which accepts ports for an auxilliary transmission cooler, so that will be happening. It was available as a factory option on certain models but i forget which. Also available for the trans case is an extra deep sump with cooling fins cast into it so this will also be happening. Im saying this as my Defender has none of the above improvements and it got so hot the other day the seat box near burnt my leg, that would be no fun over a decent trek.

As well as the Rubicon, i would like to drive down to the south of Spain to see a friend i have not seen for 5 years or so. This trip would take in Normandy, La Rochelle where the U Boats were penned in WW2 down and drift across to Perpignan catch a days rest at a friends house then across the Pyrenees into Spain and follow a SSW direction down through the Sierra Nevadas with Castell del Ferro as the final destination.
There is a mild temptation to get the ferry across from Gibraltar to Tangiers, make a phone call back home to rub someones nose into the fact i was in Africa then hot foot it back to Gibraltar in time for tiffin.

I also would like to drive to the Nordcap but i doubt that will be in an UMM as 'tis somewhat colder up that-a-way, or i could drive up the Dalton if it makes it to Tacoma. Basically i want to see the Aurora Borealis, in memory of my Mum, who isnt dead yet but at 65 cant remember who i am. I remember her saying she always wanted to see them and she never had chance.

Then if i get bored there's the trip that goes like this, France, Switzerland, Brindisi in Italy then the Ferry to Patras in Greece because why not.

This is a fun trip. Ive done it by train. So worth it. It would have been better without the 14 hours in a metal tube shooting across the Atlantic on both side of the journey.

Still nothing,
I give up, if it shows up it shows up. fed up of people and their bull. I have also been through and deleted all the threads I started that feel on their ass and that landrover turd episode.
So in effect that means I am full circle without a project and any particular direction. That said I have a pile of Hilux parts I should do something with but no motor or transmission options.
I guess we will see what happens. I tried finding Old Blue but she gone.
