1980 3rz swap help
« on: Apr 02, 2019, 05:44:32 AM »
I have a 1980 4wd pickup with a wore out 20r that I’m wanting to pull out and swap in a 3rz. I’m comfortable with the fab work of getting the engine to fit but I’m nervous about the wiring. Has anyone made a diagram or a swap harness yet? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

The problem is they are all so different. 1st option, put the taco harness in the truck and use taco dash and steering column. 2 merge the 2 harnesses (what we did on mine). I would go that route again. I like the factory gauges and dash of the 1st gen. Get the vin off both trucks. Get on toyodiy and print out both schematics. From there it's not it's not that bad.

Thanks I’ll look into those and study the two. Do you have any advice from your swap?

Just swap the taco harness into the 80. Mod to work with 80 dash. (easy)
That way everything just works and you upgrade to wiring from this century. (first gen harness suck)

When y’all say mod the new harness to the 1980 harness do I  just splice into the ignition and gauge cluster?

Unless you are really good at wiring or have alot of time on your hands to learn, swapping the entire harness is going to be easiest.
When i swapped my 79 to an 86(i know not exactly what you are doing)  i had to mod the cluster, ignition, parking lamp plugs, used the late heater switch.

>Chuck Norris invented black. In fact, he invented the entire spectrum of visible light. Except pink. Tom Cruise invented pink.
