Duel battery setup
« on: Feb 10, 2019, 02:06:22 PM »
I'm going to be installing a power converter in my 1st gen 4Runner soon. I'm looking into going with a duel batter setup before I install the power converter. I was wondering if any of you guys have done a dual battery setup in a 1st gen 4Runner and how you went about it? Do I really need a super expensive dual battery charging kit or just a battery isolator? I am also thinking about using a 100-amp relay to disconnect power to my power converter when the truck is not running using either a rocker switch or just power from an ignition wire. What is everybody thoughts on that? I do not have a winch or light bars at this time but will be installing them later on. When I do install the winch do you guys think it would be a good idea to use a high power relay to disconnect the winch power when the truck is not running?

When you say power converter I am assuming you mean a 12V DC to 120V AC power inverter. To do it right, you need to first get a higher amp alternator. The stock alt will not adequately charge 2 batteries. I'm not sure what you mean by "super expensive dual battery charging kit" but yes, you should use some sort of battery isolator. There is no reason to use a high power relay to disconnect power to the inverter as it shouldn't draw any power when it is off, same for the winch.

I currently have a Denso 160 amp alternator is that not big enough?

I'm also thinking of using 0 gauge wire to compensate for the run to the back and avoid voltage drop. Is that to big?

Zero gauge is a bit overkill, 4 or 6 gauge would likely do the trick.  What are you planning on running off the inverter?  With the cost of an additional battery/isolater/wire/fuses/etc., would your money be better spent on a small lightweight gas/propane generator?  Depending on what your needs are, you might consider a portable power station they can be charged from 110, 12vlt, or solar panel

With the size of your alternator, you shouldn't need dual batteries, it will generate more than enough amps to run extra lights and a winch a winch, the battery's only real purpose is to provide the amps/volts needed to start the engine, once running, everything should draw its power from the alternator.

Its going to cost me under 350 to do a duel battery setup with inverter and solar supplement ill be running a small fridge and small led lights for camping and on occasion powering a cabin in the woods also ill need to run power tools and don't want to deal with the extra weight and noise from a generator and when I go on my 2+ week camping getaways id rather have more room for supplies

If you haven't found them yet, you might find these sites helpful, Donrowe, Caravan Plus.

Might find this Dual Battery Setups post on tacomaworld helpful as well.
