Diff gears
« on: Feb 05, 2019, 07:06:32 PM »
How do I figure out what diff gears I have in my 88 4Runner? Its a stock truck almost all number matching truck. What gears so you guy run in your first gen 4runners? And what gears would you recommend running with 31x10.5's? I'm asking because it sometimes wants to stall out leaving a full stop in 1st on a slight hill.

Manual or auto trans?
In my pickup with a 22re, 5 speed , and 31x10.5 tires I had 4.56 gears and the speedo was within 1 mile per hour.  They were a nice improvement from the factory 4.10.

4.56s will work with 31s.    But I don't think it's worth the trouble.

4.88s will work with 31s and would allow  you to go to 33s.

X2, unless you find a '89-'95 truck being parted out that came w/the 4.56 gears, or have absolutely no plans to ever go to 33's.

The gear code on door tag will be G254 for the factory 4.56 gears.  You can also find 4.88 factory gear sets as well, they were on v6/auto's w/31's.

Toyota aluminum mag wheels offset 8

Shouldn't rub w/31's, on the stock offset.  What do the front control arms look like in relation to the differential section, are they flat, or do they make a slight arch?

A slight arch.I was look at my iner wheel wells today. I had a worn out splash gurd in the front of my drivers side wheel well sticking out about 4 inches that the tire was rubbing on at full turn to the right. I trimed it with a razor knife and no more rubbing. But really I can fit 33's with out a lift?

12.50, no

10.50, some people don't have a problem, others a slight rub.    Rub is usually with wheel turned.
