Topic: Eco Friendly Grease removal (Solid front axle)

Hey everyone!

I am currently rebuilding my solid front axle and I have a problem with removing the grease effectively. I am looking for a way to remove the grease within the axle (to put new grease in) and to remove the built up grease (mixed with dirt) that is caked on the outside. Preferably in a eco-friendly way or at least to get it to an Autozone or Pepboys for recycling/proper disposal.

I hear vinegar can be effective but I am not sure that it can then be recycled. Thank you all for the suggestions in advanced.

I always use a cheap camp kitchen tub under it, then use a gloved hand to get the big chunks and then a screwdriver to get the bulk of it that is dried and stuck on. Wire brush for detailing, then final clean with a paint brush and rag soaked in mineral spirits.

For grease I use what Bobby Long told to use, a red hi-tack grease, I use Lucas!!


For cleaning I use Kerosene and a pan below it which I dumb into a can I have for recycle, same with the Kerosene that is in my 30-gallon cleaning tank. We have a big recycling center at the dump in Roseville where I take it to be recycled!!

What I ended up doing was cleaning as much grease that was caked on and still sitting in the axle housing as I could to then put it in the back of my car and transport it to a local car wash where I cleaned it. It came out well enough to were I didn't need to do much.

For anyone else wondering about doing the same thing I would suggest transporting the axle using a truck bed so ALL the cleaning could be done at the wash as now I have little clumps of grease mixed with dirt in my garage that I probably will never get out . Other wise make sure to bring some wire brushes and a cordless drill/driver with a wire wheel with you to get the hard stuff off and just remember that it'll never be perfectly clean
