Montana Runner
« on: Jan 02, 2019, 10:37:55 AM »
300K met H8PVMNT on this forum 2017 while rebuilding a 22R carburetor. Learned to use Pinesol to clean parts because simple green etched aluminum. And he learned a lot more from H8PVMNT during the carb teardown and rebuild. 300K sat there for about 14 hours from start to finish and it worked first time after reinstall.

During Jan 2017 a Seattle based 4Runner named Old Red was for sale but was picked up by another Wheeler from the Seattle area. Old Red was available again August 2017. Bought the truck at that time and flew to Seattle in August to drive the truck back to Arizona.

Here is the Old Red original build thread.

SqWADoosh's 85 Runner Build Thread

We decided to drive to Montana and meet H8PVMNT on the way home. Here is 300K's Old Red thread that details the trip to Montana and then back to Tucson.

Old Red makes it to Arizona! 5 states in 2 days!

A shot of Old Red and H8PVMNT's 4runner August 2017.

During December 2017, H8PVMNT decided to sell his 4runner carcass. H8PVMNT had placed the 1989 4runner on a 1994 SB Truck chassis. This was the carcass description:

It is sold as a rolling chassis on the suspension, bald roller tires, no drive train parts except the axle housings, rear axles front hub/spindles etc. All body and interior is intact. I will throw in the bikini top I made last summer and you can have the stereo too. It has nice sliders, bumpers. A full sized spare fits up under the frame and sucks way up in there because I re-did the cross-member. Hy-steer is there which is like $400 so that's a good piece. The front axle housing is all gusseted and set up like we want. It really drives down the road quite nice, I got the caster just right. The wiring harness is from a carbed 1984 pickup. Title if for the chassis, which is a 1994 pickup. The 4runner body was swapped a few years back, Also I don't know if 300K told you but I am going to see if I can get you a title for the 4runner body so you will have a pickup title for the frame and a 4runner title for the body. Then you can register it either way.

Sent H8PVMNT a paypal payment and waited another 8 months to drive to Montana to pick her up from H8PVMNT. These were some H8PVMNT shots of his 4runner.

The plan for the Montana Runner is try to locate a low mileage 3RZ or order a 22REP Stage 2.5. After that, we have the drive train that was removed from Old Red during the transmission(R151F)/transfer case (244:1) upgrade. Also 4.56 (3RZ) or 4.88 (22REP Stage 2.5) 3rds and 33s. But as of now we are working a 85 SC LB 4x4 work truck.

So before I forget the story, let me jot it down here with pictures for 300K to read when he is 62yo.

We started early in the morning on 25 July 2018. Stopped off at the car wash on our way to Highwood, MT.

Driving North to Page, AZ. As I recall, 300K slept most of the way to Page.

Hmmm...not a single picture of Page. We stopped for a burger and fries and then headed toward Lake Powell.

And then entered Utah.

UTAH

We drove the I-10 to the I-17 and then drove the 89 out of Flagstaff, AZ, through Page, AZ and onto Kanab, UT.

Kanab, UT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanab,_Utah). Nice town. Typically stop here to fill up and eat on the way North and South. It is on the 89 right where the 89 starts heading North before we take the Utah 20 to I-15 North about 90 miles.

Panguitch, UT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panguitch,_Utah) is near the turn to Utah Highway 20 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_State_Route_20) which ascends to a ~8000 foot peak and descends to the I-15.

Heading toward the Utah Highway 20.

Here we are at the Highway 20 turn. There is a small general store specializing in deer, elk, and buffalo jerky. Unfortunately all the animals are farm raised.

Here are a few Highway 20 pics from the trip when we bought Old Red August 2017 and drove her back to Tucson via Highwood, MT.

Salt Lake City Steak Out. Twas hard to find parking to eat at this restaurant, but we drove up and down one way streets with me back seat driving 300K. And when we got there, he didn't want to eat the fufu food.
