Couple of questions.

I have a smog test due for an '86 22r Fed smog, going thru the tune-up/check tests, went to set the timing and

'85 FSM(book) says 5* BTDC with vacuum advance plugged, but no numbers for without it plugged

'88 FSM(digital) says 0* BTDC with vacuum advance plugged, but just has 10-14* when rechecking the timing but doesn't state it is for both. I can't remember if the 22r's timing is supposed to change or not? If it does, what should I look into, the vacuum avance module is good, both sides hold a vacuum and move the lever on the distributor.

For better chances of passing emissions testing, run low octane fuel.

The idle RPM and ignition timing is a base. Full advance is more important. As I remember, full advance on ignition timing on my 1985 22R was around 2500 RPMs.

Let us know where you end up on full advance timing... and your emissions test.

Best I can tell is that the timing on a 22r isn't supposed to change, or at least not in a way that effects smog tests.

Since the hood tag is faded, I went with the '88 FSM and set the timing to just a little before 0*, bounces around 0* to 1*, but not below 0*.

Smog numbers, Max HC is 150/180 w/average 40/35, Max CO% is 1.20/1.20 w/average 0.10/0.20

Rpm......%CO2......%O2.......HC.........CO%
1000......9.3.........7.8..........35..........0.02
2448.......11.1.......5.3.........19..........0.00

All good now until '20, maybe the last snog test if I set up a Trust in NV, and transfer the truck to that Trust.
