82 pickup camper
« on: Sep 10, 2018, 05:17:21 PM »
i bought this sexy thing in 2014, i was only 14 so it didn't get messed with very much till two years later.
my dad had been driving it for about 9 months and blew up second and third gear of the stock L52, so he sold me (at a discounted price since he blew my old one) a w56 that already had the doubler, it has a twin stick.
i will be posting pics as soon as possible.

it has the sr5 gauge setup with the voltage and oil gauges down below the center blower vent.
had ac but i removed it, should have just repaired it, it is very hot in st. george
a year ago i put a spool in it since i expected to retire it from being the daily d.

about a year and a half ago it bent a valve, so i took one of my dad's running engines and stuck it in, when i filled it with anti-freeze i for got to top it off after running it for a few minutes to fill the heater and blew the head gasket 1,000 miles later, sent some pretty spectacularly large puffs out the exhaust as it dumped water into the engine.
took my dad's block and my head (the #4 spark plug hole in his was stripped and i didn't feel like fixing it) and built the engine that is in it now and it runs absolutely amazingly, just a little leaky

i put a turbo clutch in it (normal clutch is a 8 7/8 whereas the turbo is 9 1/4 but still 1,200 lbs and therefore a little less "grabby") which really helps with being smooth on the trail.

comparing the two

i finished sealing the floor around the shifter knobs, sooo much quieter. the knob near the parking brake is an adjustable high idle i installed, it can be adjusted anywhere from idle to wot, it is made from a vernier throttle out of a Cessna(being an aircraft mechanic gives me access to "worn beyond use/damaged" parts that are actually still functioning).

the truck is an SR5, it has a tilt wheel and all the gauges they put on the early, gas gauge don't work sadly.

i also installed an under the hood starter button.

i didn't like how since there was nothing i had to access on the passenger side of the engine that i wouldn't have to remove the air box for i rebuilt the intake so that it would be away from the exhaust and allow easier access to the accessories on the drivers side, it's just a temporary job, i'll be redoing it to make it look and maybe flow a little better, i don't know what performance difference it may have caused because i changed the exhaust system at the same time.

as i have mentioned i replaced the stock exhaust manifold with the tubular kind from a different truck(i don't know what it came off of to have both the individual tubes as well as the single center bolt), but it performs way better then the old one.

i replaced the exhaust with 2" to the masterflow muffler and 2 1/4" out the very back, it made a noticeable drop in under 2000 rpm torque, but improved top end more then enough to make up for it.

i replaced the brake booster with the larger diameter one off of an 86, the brakes are very sensitive, i don't recommend doing it without also upgrading to a 1" master or the larger brakes of the later trucks.

i put a late model valve cover on it and therefore had to modify it, the late valve cover was not designed for the dual row cam chain and so i had to remove the oil shield from under the fill cap, i accidentally took off the oil cap once after that while it was running and oil sprayed all over. :hammerhead:

recently i had an issue with my front crank seal, it suddenly started leaking so i dug in to replace it, when i got the oil pump off i noticed(but forgot to take a picture of) that the seal had worked it's way out about a 1/4" and the lip had touched the bevel at the neck of the harmonic balancer and worn completely off, pictured below.

has anyone had this issue? could it be a bad seal or sloppy oil pump machine job?
