1982 factory power steering?
« on: Aug 20, 2018, 06:11:39 PM »
Did Toyota equip any of the 4x4 trucks with power steering in 1982? I know i should just switch to hi steer but that's a plan later on, all my steering components are brand new so I'll run that for now, but with the Spartan going in the front diff this next week most guys say I'll really want power steering when its locked.

I found a power steering gear box listed locally but it says 81-88? Surely the ifs trucks used a different power steering gear box than my 82, all the hi steer kits say so anyway?

Can someone school me on this confusion.

You need a power steering gear from a solid axle truck, 79-85.  I don't have any pics handy but if you search you will see there is a big difference in a solid axle gear vs ifs gear. I believe the rest of the parts can be sourced from any year 22r/re, 2wd or 4wd

I didn't belive the years we're correct seeing how they switched to ifs in what 86?

Anyway I hadn't seen and 79-83 trucks in person with power steering but some people told me that there were such creatures alive, betting that finding a donor will be near impossible then & rebuilt gear box and other parts will be as expensive as hi steer .

Thanks man, you've sure been a great help to me each time I'm in need!

I'm worried that my D.U.I. dizzy is going to interfere with the power steering pump mounting. They show a different dizzy if your truck has power steering saying one unit won't work on a truck with power steering? This dizzy came on my truck so I'm not sure which one I have, tried calling them to see but its after hours so I don't know at this point.

Looking above the Alt. I'm trying to picture how the pump would mount in there? Looks pretty compact already....  Hmmm.

Can you post a picture? That thought has crossed my mind since they are a rather large dizzy.

I can't post pics currently but I'm working on it. I contacted them today & my dizzy won't work with factory power steering pump locations. The other model would that has a longer shaft.

Maybe an electric pump
