85 4Runner Soft Top
« on: Jul 20, 2018, 10:16:51 AM »
Hi all, I’m new here.  I had a 82 truck that I built into a rock crawler and an 86 4Runner daily driver that I sold to go to grad school.  10 years later I’m buying an 85 4Runner with an automatic transmission and the first thing I want to buy is a soft top for it.  I would like something durable and fairly easy to install since I sold all my tools 10 years ago too and will have to purchase all new tools.

I run a Killer Toy Tops (www.killertoytops.com) and have been very happy with it.  It's easy to install and the only downside that I've found is the frame doesn't collapse for storage very well unless you're willing to do some disassembly.  I have a spot in my shed that I was able to make due with for years and now I've been running it as the primary top for quite a while.  I had a few pieces replaced after about 8 years and the owner was easy to deal with and the replacement parts fit great.  I'd recommend them based on my experience.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

I am not sure if I got the 0.00001% discount that I requested, though with rounding it may have been included.

So I just bought one for my '85. I bought a Softopper out of Longmont CO (and I live in CO.) I think they look great and are high quality. Still expensive but worth a look. I'm a newbie but after I get all my posts I'll post a pic. It wasn't too bad for install...a few tricky parts but not bad at all. Looks awesome! I got black with the tinted windows for my scheme.

I had a Can-Back for my 1st gen and loved it.

They went out of production for a while, but they're back and make soft tops for 4runners; https://www.can-back.com/product-page/toyota-4-runner

I wouldnt pay 2600 for a whole 4runner! Much less a top. 850 is even a rip off. I was thinking 5-600 at the most.

Haha, it would be a great way to double the value of an old 4Runner then.

This is all just very sad to hear. Canback was always my favorite soft top and I considered them to be the very best.
I guess it’s killer toy tops now. I was very happy with the top Jon owns. Quality piece and very functional.

KTT makes a great product and so does Softopper.  ive had my softopper on for about a year now.  the only thing I have to say about it is that I did not use the Velcro pieces for the rear flap because it looks tacky when the top is rolled, and there is a small gap in the corner just behind the cab where water can come in in heavy rains.

May be a rare gem in your area. There are tons of them around here. Running driving 85 22re sunroof sr5 adjustable seats for less than 2 grand. Ifs 4runners aren't even desirable so they go for less than a grand usually.

See it how you want. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. They are hunting trucks. Not too many get restored around here. Now. Flawless 85 pickup will fetch 6-7k all day. The last prestine 86 turbo 4runner I saw go around here went for $1800. I almost got it to part out and make money but hated to cut it up as it was a complete driving truck. They just aren't desirable around here to most people.

well you live in an odd area, i would say.  the market is pretty darn good for these trucks just about everywhere right now.  and if i found a turbo 1st gen in good shape for 1800 bucks it would be on ebay within an hour haha.
