1992 4x4 5spd question/search for confirmation
« on: Mar 07, 2018, 01:33:17 PM »
So I recently purchased a 1992 Hilux 4x4 5sp for what in Alaska is a really reasonable price.  My question is that when shifting I have no issues except that it Pops out of 1st (no biggie just hold it in) but 3rd will not go. It grinds like I have no clue how to drive a manual. Nothing wrong with the rest. I replaced the Seat/Shifter bushing and this really did nothing as it appeared the "old" ones weren't actually that old.

What options should I be looking at? Clutch Slave/Master seem ok, Trans fluid is ok,  thoughts?  Is it just time to get it rebuilt?
Thanks!

Sounds like time for a new trans.  Or have it rebuilt.

Cheese, Thanks for the reply!!

Next question is, while there are some things I am competant enough to do on a vehicle rebuilding a trans is not one of them. Is it more cost efficient to buy a "new/used/rebuilt" than to ask them to rebuild it themselves?

First of all, where do you live in Alaska?  If you live in a big city, then the odds of getting a used, or having a quality mechanic rebuild one for you is better.  As for getting one shipped to you, I know shipping to Alaska isn't cheap!  Plus, a fully rebuilt trans costs about $1300 give or take, depending on model.
