Surface rust on 3rd member
« on: Feb 25, 2018, 05:02:50 PM »
Hey guys. So I bought a fully built 3rd from Marlin about a year ago and put it right into the truck, right out of the box. I did this right before joining the military last April so when I came back for Christmas, I noticed that the entire outside of the 3rd was covered in rust. My question is was I supposed to spray something on it and if so, what do you suggest using to clean it up to spray? Thanks!

Was the surface painted?

I guess not. Didn't know I had to paint it. I'm guessing I should take it out, sand it, paint it, then put it back in? Any suggestions for getting the rust off and what paint to use?

You could leave it in and paint it with rustoleum rusty metal primer, then rustoleum stops rust (pick a color)  with a brush on the truck............

Takes a while for it to fully harden.

If it's not scaly, just paint over it.

Look up the instructions for rusty metal primer on rustoleum's site.

Here’s what I’d do…

Take a big wire brush and brush the heck out of it.

Spray it down good with engine degreaser.

Then put some MEK, Acetone, or Lacquer Thinner in spray bottle and spray it down.

Wipe it down with a clean cloth.

Spray a coat of good metal primer (Rust-0leum), let it dry well, then spray it with a good coat of Rust-Oleum for metal.

That should be good for a LONG time.
