Topic: Weber 32/36 stumbling at extreme upward angle

1982 22r with Weber 3600 , had it standing on it's rear today a few times and each occasion I had to stay in the throttle some to keep it running. It's been on the truck 6 months with zero issues besides today. Some additional info I'm running a bed mounted fuel cell it was full, electric fuel pump below the bed and a good manual pressure regulator under the hood.

Is this just something common with these carbs or is there something I can do different short of fuel injection to keep it going when climbing at steep angles ?

Carb will never be good at steep angles as it'll mess with the float inside the fuel bowl. If this isn't a DD you could always go propane over efi.

Get a hand throttle for it.  You can dial up the idle a little bit when needed.  Ask me how I know it works...

This is my buddy CrankyCrawler on Widow Maker Hill during last years Moab trip.  He's running a carb with a hand throttle.  He stalled on this and actually managed to get it running again.  Lots of black smoke, but it started.  Sometimes the hand throttle will allow you to give it enough throttle to get it started while keeping your feet on the clutch and brake when releasing the brake at all will result in rolling back.

The hill climb mod works great on the weber.  You simply plug up the bowl vent and run a new one from a passage all ready in the casting.  It has been done and there are write ups all over.  I started playing with Webers last year and it is the first thing I did before even installing it...

I've never heard of the " Hill climb mod " once it warms up some outside I may have to attempt that. I'm a complete novice to Weber/red line carbs but I'm obviously dealing with a common issues which is comforting at least. Other than the stumbling at extreme pitches it's been a fantastic carb. Fires up immediately no matter the temp. & performs flawlessly with fantastic mileage, having only a 10gallon  fuel cell currently that's  mileage is pretty important.
