Long field questions
« on: Jan 14, 2018, 07:26:11 PM »
Ovrarok was talking about an arb 132 for Christmas and there it began, I scored a new arb extremely reasonable off ebay. Finally had the time yesterday to tear down the front end. After I had everything apart during inspection first thing I noticed the rig does have long fields, 3rd member in great condition, thanks shamb  :usa: , although my driver side outer birfield spline is a roughed up on the start of splines along with the O.D. of shaft near start of splines. (I would post picture but can't figure out how to resize)... From what I don't know. My hub splines look perfect.  The inside of my spindles are smooth. I'm trying figure out what has caused it. Another question, the long fields did not have snap rings on the end of birfield splines. Could this be why my axle seals were spewing? Sorry about the length just trying to figure things out. Thanks

There has been debates over the snap ring to run it or not.

My theory, it came with it from the factory, it retains the axle I  the proper location, I run it.

That said if you have imgur or another photo sharing service post the "direct link" to it and one of us can make it shoe up for you. It sounds to me like some trash possibly got in there at one point and has scuffed up the shaft but without images there's 1000 words we can't see.

Here it is I'm guessing your right redneckcustom, as far as clips go I ordered the outside birfield snap ring, and will bring my snap ring pliers to the trail.

To add I have 30 spline longs and will be running an arb, is martack nessecary?

But no to your question. Do not weld on the splines. Install the c clip and let it eat

Was anybody able to see the pics of my splines? As far as arb goes I plan to run off power tank till I get compressor, so I want to run the co2 trough the arb solenoid, and use the arb rocker switch.  Have any of you yota heads here tried this?

Yes we can see the picture when we click the link. I say trash from old bearing or something like that caused it.

I have no input in the arb thing sorry.

Maybe I'll start a new thread for the arb co2 dilemma. Back to the axle talk. Like I said when I pulled apart axles there where no clips on birfield. Could this be the explanation why my axle was leaking gear oil from knuckles? The seals that were in the housing had less than 2k Miles on them still perfectly fine. (From what I could see)

Were they Marlin seals, no
Will I be installing marlins HD seal as replacement , of course
I will be adding clips to birfield when I assemble. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something. I would hate to reassemble this and have it leaking again. The bore the the seal rides in is perfect. The long field seal surface is good aswell. Thanks again guys

Yes, that is all Power Tank Steve runs on his runner, has for years. Just make sure you have no leaks. Steve sells a whole set-up just for air lockers!!

I would bet that's why it was leaking

When you put your axle together how did you center the knuckle to the housing? If it is not center that can cause the seals to start leaking!!

From what I gathered he did not build the axle. Also if it weren't centered wouldn't he have trouble with hub dials not turning properly? I would bet it's nothing more than the lack of retainer clip and the axle was too far in the housing and the seal surface was not riding in the seal.

They just have to be off a little bit with stock style seals, that is why Marlin came out with the Eco-seals!! My first time rebuilding my axle, it leaked after my first trip and I had no problems locking the hubs in!!

Well I got it all together, more than happy with the twin arb compressor I installed. Now my mild birfield click when fully turned  is much louder, even slightly turned. I am not suprised knowing how much more strain is on the axle while locked. Anyways had a few questions. Are the 30 spline rcv birfield compatible with my long field inners?
