Code 14 '90 3.0
« on: Dec 14, 2017, 09:50:30 PM »
Keep getting code 14-No IGF(-ignition fired) signal.
Started the end of May, the engine shut off after firing it up, since then it has cut-out and instantly fired back up while driving it twice, and 3 times within a mile with a replacement igniter.

Checked and cleaned grounds

Replaced Igniter with one that was supposed to have just 30k on it from Japan, it wasn't pitted or oxidized like my 200k one, so I assume it is a low mileage one.

When hooked up to the oem coil, engine will fire up and run for about 10 minutes than die and not restart, however when hooked up to the Jacobs ignition system, it only cuts out/instantly fires back up, code 14 is registered with both ignitions.

Currently, takes 10 or more cranks before it will sputter to life, but run for 30-40 minutes w/o issue.  Turn it off scan for codes nothing, turn it over and it will just crank, check for codes, get code 14.

Before I buy an ecu, is there anything else to check?

I have noticed different parts numbers for each year ecu, anyone know if they are interchangeable for testing purposes, a buddy has an '89, just don't want to mess his up.

I think I have resolved the issue, messing around with it today, I could get it to die by wiggling the wires to the coil, after pulling the harness apart I traced the problem to the negative wire.  The wire appeared to be brittle near the plug, cut it back to good section and soldered it back to the connector.  With it reattached couldn't get the engine to die wiggling the wire, will see if the issue returns.
