Not too bad outside this morning.  Started out at 30 degrees then quickly dropped to 20 by about 5:00AM.  No wind though.  Today I got the original 20r ready to pull.  I don't even want to pull it but it is so petrified that oil cascades out of every seal and seam.  Not like the new engine won't be more fun, but I get the feeling I will never have a more dependable, can't kill me engine than this old, Toyota built 20r.

The years of work, abuse and neglect are really showing as I take things apart.

The starter almost fell off in my hands and there is one stiffener missing and only 3 bolts holding the trans on.

Took inventory of the rod ends and spring bushings.  One rod end had about 1/8" of play and the other has about 1/2". These are FJ80 style on a big herkin' double tubed tie rod meant for old school cross over steering. Spring eye bushings are oozing out of the shackles and hangers.  I should probably upgrade to poly this time.

It is a good thing I am going through this stuff before putting the poor truck back on the road :).

Got the Hemi shoe-horned in there this morning.  I have to admit it's not a bad fit.  Making an adapter out of JB weld and some chicken wire to mate to the W56...

OK enough with the Hemi farce...

This morning I got old gooey out of the engine bay.  Had a little herby action going on.  Trans and engine did not want to be separated.  Finally dropped the trans and yanked on it with the whole mess loose.  When it finally let go I was so busy swearing at it I let the cross member land on may face.  Not usually into posting selfies but I thought this was good for a laugh so...

Good thing my nose broke it's fall  :gap:.

There was some discussion on removing your torque rod in another thread.  This is how the torque rod un-installs itself from the frame after about a year of wheeling and driving with moderately improved suspension travel...

I told you to get a load leveler man! put a bunch of front bias in it and wiggle the motor. I ended up standing on the frame rail and kicking the head. that didn't do much, so I resorted to really rough housing it and it broke away. level it out, pull forward and boom.

Leaving the freshened up 20r dangling and bagged up while we go on a trip to the beach.  Winter finally got here in a big way.  Waiting on some suspension components and maybe a chinook.  Should be back at it in a couple weeks...

I stared at that photo several times, watching the Marlin Crawler snow fall.  I got chills just looking at it. :disturbed:

I am thankful I live here in the AZ desert.  It's forecast to be 70d F with lots of sunshine today, getting down to a low of 42 by tomorrow morning.  Thursday is forecast to get down to 28d F by early Friday morning!!   :yikes:

At that temp we may loose some non-indigenous plants and flowers.   :nerv:

We have a couple months of cold and crappy weather, and a couple months of miserable monsoon crap, then about 7 to 8 months of really nice weather. :gap:

I am definitely a fair-weather junkie!!   :best:

I've been guilty of doing it before but, did you truly leave it dangling or drop it to the ground or on a tire so it's not up in the air?

You don't want it freezing to something on the ground,  this way you just knock the snow off it and stick it.   :usa:

If you're worried about the piston slowly compressing, cut a piece of angle iron and put along piston rod to take the load.

Got home and it was -13F and the engine was still dangling in the same position.  I had a part out engine on this hoist for about a month so it has been tested.  Everything is covered in prelube and I wrapped it in plastic so it would shed moisture so it should be all right.  I could have left it in the house but with wood heat only is was the same temp as outside.

It was really something coming home to the house a 0F.  I got up every 2 hours to feed the fire and it was 67 inside by about 5AM.

I don't know if I will do a thread but the power feels in line with any 5 liter+ V8 I have driven. 18.6 miles per gallon.  Maybe I will buy or lease one and then I'll make a real thread out of it.

Got bored tonight waiting for all the snow to melt so I got my front springs sorted out.  Ordered medium rate Old Man Emu from 4wheel parts (with freeeee shipping!) but the front drivers side was not going to be available for a couple months. I know I could have ordered heavy rate springs all around and tuned later but I have ran emu on several different applications and the medium rate has always been just right, beefier than stock but with a nice smooth ride.  Also the mediums are a bit cheaper and that is a factor too.  I am shooting for a nice low practical pickup like this truck has always been, just with more quality than rehashed stock springs.

Called ARB USA and the dude informed me that the heavy spring is exactly the same except for the addition of one more leaf under the two mains.  Luckily they had 8 heavy rate CS009FA springs in Jacksonville and 4wheel parts substituted one and ate the extra shipping for me.  Anyway I pulled the extra leaf out and the drivers side spring had about 3/4" more arch than the passenger side to make up for the perches, so now all is well.  I just have to finish the dodge rear end this weekend and I can proceed with the extreme outdoor winter build...

Well I am done fixing the rear end on the wife's Durango, vacation is over and we got most of a good night's sleep so I finally got to make a bit of progress on the truck. It was even up to 42 degrees this morning!

I have been running rears up front with some longer shocks and hoops and the extra down travel ripped the torque rod off the frame.  This left about a 2 1/2" hole on the inside of the frame. The fame wasn't cracking but the nasty hole was not healthy looking at all.  I made a minimal fishy plate with a bunch of holes drilled in it to spot weld it all over.  It's just a bit thicker than 1/16" so if I end up mounting an IFS box later it won't be a pain to deal with.  I intend on using the stock steering indefinitely but you know how it goes :).

Did some speculating on moving the front end up an inch or so by shortening the drag link and re-drilling perches.  I have had 35s on this truck many times and I would like to run them sometimes in the future.  They barely rub on the firewall and barely rub on the steering box at full stuff.  Tires fit easier on 1st gens for some reason. If I were to move the front end up and inch though 35s would cram into the steering box too much and become a birf breaker, so I decided to leave it all alone for now.

Maybe some time I will use crossover steering but for now this will be good enough for the 2" of lift and small tires.  The stock push-pull steering has never been a hindrance on this truck with it's low ride height.  There is enough range of motion. The drag link will kiss the u-bolts a bit but no big deal.

After that at about 6:00AM the boys came out and we got the drag link, shocks and old springs busted loose...

Do you know what the measurements from spring eye to center pin is? Are they the rear springs? Thanks
