I guess it was a good weekend for installing a w56 in a first gen for us both.

There are a couple small rust holes in the floor pan. I was going to address it when I patch them. Right now there are just extra holes in the floor. I think I have a spare W56 floor boot for it. I’ll be using that as a template for locating the captured nuts to hold the boot in place.

Wednesday evening I cleaned up a salvaged starter I wanted to try and after putting it on I realized I was only one lead, a plug and a few quarts of oil from starting the engine.  After some cranking with the coil wire unhooked to get the fuel and oil up it fired up easy.  The 22re performance 282 cam seems to idle pretty smooth.

What I meant to write but hadn't had enough coffee was...  What are you doing for a t-case cross member?
It is some home brew late night square tube cross member my dad built from stuff he had laying around about 15 years ago. It broke on the rubicon and was substituted with a heavy duty ratchet strap for the trip home. Steve patched it back together in my driveway and it hasn't had any attention since. I have made some frame plates for the factory bolt locations but haven't gotten any further.

I went on and started the engine again, bumping it up to about 1,600 rpms for 20 minutes in an attempt to follow Jim Putney's cam break in procedure. After that I noticed a new oil drip under the bell housing.  The rear main was leaking, which seems to be contagious on this forum among fresh re-builds.  Off went the trans. The unknown source rear main I had in my $15 craigslist gasket set pushed in with little more than thumb pressure and apparently popped out just as easy when the engine got running.  It was in there kind of half spat out at a funny angle.  At least it was clear where the leak was coming from.

I didn't have another new rear main, so I dug through my box of recent tear downs and found a really nice, blue, pliable, un-worn looking rear main all ready in the cast thing.  This truck always does well on left overs and we love removing and installing heavy drivetrain components so what the heck  :gap:.

The old leftover one doesn't leak by the way.

I only had piece meal time to work on things but with a three day weekend it added up.  I was able to put together my crawl box.  This is the second Advance Adapters TX2 I have used.  Last time the bearings just about went in with a rubber mallet, this one was very tight and required the press.  That was just fine with me, but the bore the shift rail slides in was just as tight, requiring a hammer to shift from high to low .  I took it back apart, my hands all covered in Toyota orange FIPG.  After about a half a roll of paper towels, I used a 3/8" extension wrapped in 400 grit sand paper to polish out the shift rail bore until the rail slid with only finger pressure.  Back together and ready to crawl.  One day I will be able to afford a Marlin adapter when I am building a truck and maybe then I won't have finish up the machine work for the manufacturer.  Oh well it was cheap and it works.

This morning in the dark I finished up grinding the early "total spline" 1980 t-case input with a worn out flappy wheel on my side grinder until it fit in the dual case coupler.  You could see where the coupler splines hit from little marks on the shaft when you bumped them together.  I worked slowly and carefully and finished by spinning the shaft against the grinder wheel to make a smoother final finish. I like the idea of the extra beef there but by the time you get the shaft to fit it's not much thicker than the "fuse" on the later style t-cases anyway.  Marlin's "total spline" doesn't swell in the back like the Toyota spline so it fits in the coupler.  Grinding on the input seemed super sketchy to me, but after reading the tech on the marlin store site and a few write ups of guys running 38s with a rear case like this I feel OK about it. Time will tell.  If I break it I will rebuild the case with 4.7s.

After that I put new seals in and swapped to some '85 flanges for the bigger drive line bolts. Oh and also put the 4.37 speedo sender in for a closer reading with the small tires and deep axle gears.

I am using an old clutch I had on the previous 20r.  It's not new but it's the bigger later model one from my old '94 and worn with this matching flywheel so I'll finish it out.  It was working just fine when I took the truck apart.  You could use a block of wood and emery cloth on the flat but I don't think I could pull off the preferred .026" step grind without some more tools ;).

Well with 4 day work weeks I have been making progress, however, a farmer buddy who's Tacoma I work on sometimes asked me if I would help him get some plowing and seeding done last week.  The winter was so long he only has about 2 weeks to get all his spring wheat seeded or he won't be able to harvest it.  He is a pretty good buddy so I took two days and gave him Friday too, which lead to a field fix Saturday with the welder and generator in the back of Caleb's Toyota.  Then I worked till diner time.

Thankfully it rained today so I was able to return to my normal job.

So I guess now I have a second job running this great big, expensive som-bits  :gap:...

Hanging around with farmers you get to see a lot of stuff in action and scrap laying around.  I'll give you guys a few guesses as to what I am making out of these spent "duck foot" plow teeth...

Not telling yet. I am going to post more pictures and it will become clear.  Probably no progress until Saturday.  I will give a hint though.  These pieces are originally earth moving equipment, and they still will be ;).

So your making a plow to put on the front of the toyota.

Still no, but I have thought of making one to drag behind the back with some more of these.  That is for a later date.  This will be an actual piece of the truck.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Dang now I have to actually succeed in building it.
