Lunch Break Valve Guide Removal Tool!
« on: Sep 14, 2017, 02:27:19 PM »
Lewis Hein made me a sweet tool to drive in new valve guides with:  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=102387.0

The problem remained...  How do I remove the old ones without messing up the head?  I found a youtube where a guy was working on some VW valve guides and was able to tap them and make a puller from a bolt and some tubing.  I thought I would try to apply the same technology to the Toyota scene.

It just so happens that the ID of a 20r/22r valve guide is the perfect size to run a 3/8" x 16 thread pitch tap through.  So for under $10 I got a 3/8"X16 tap, a 3/8" X 7" carriage bolt, because it has threads almost all the way down, a washer and a nut.  I cut a 4.5" piece of 3/4" tube to tighten the nut against...

Tighten the nut with a wrench whilst holding the top of the bolt still.  A little oil on the threads was good because it is tight at first...

After the first few threads it got way easier. I didn't heat up the head or anything, and after a little wrench action, BAM!  Valve guide out!

Good job. Real pullers, of course, would use ACME thread but... They cost real money.
