Rubber sandwich on the bolt.

jam nut...nut....washer....rubber.....engine mount.....rubber.....frame mount.....rubber.....washer.....bolt head

Thanks for the suggestion, I may well try that.

How are you gonna handle the wiring harness? It sounds like it might be a pain to get the dash working. Either way, can't wait to see how it turns out!! I bet it'll do 100 on flat ground...

I plan to put on a carb and simplify my life. The temperature sender never worked anyway, (I think something to do with incompatibility between the charade and rocky parts) so I'll use the aftermarket gauge I put in. The oil pressure warning light is driven by a switch, at most I will need a resistor to make that work. The charging circuit on the alternator should be the same voltage, and I'm going to start out with the Daihatsu alternator anyway, so the battery light in the dash should work.

Aside from that, there isn't much wiring on a carbureted engine. But surprises are the name of the game here, and I'm sure I'll run into something I don't expect. Maybe once it's working I'll figure out how to get the 22RE in there. That will probably involve a new wiring harness and a new gauge cluster, at least.

In other news, I will soon be getting around to putting the W56 with a 4.7 t-case into my pickup, which will free up the G52 for the Daihatsu. Plums, apples, corn, green beans, dry beans, and other miscellany have had to take priority in recent days.

H8PVMNT: you will be happy to know I'm probably going to at least start out with a carburetor on this engine. Let's start a shade-tree sleeper build competition. I think with my no-welder Daihatsu-Toyota (Toyotsu?) build I'm currently winning.

Tune in over the coming weeks for more exciting Toyotsu news!

Here is a W56 lying beside the Rocky transmission. The W56 is several inches longer, with the shifters 10" further forwards. But the 22R sits about 3-4" further back, which means that I only have to relocate the shifter about 6". I am contemplating welding a great big dog leg in the shifter.

There's also another cross member that will foul the transfer case, the one that holds the torsion bars. I think I'm going to have to cut out the middle and gusset it. I'm gonna need the world's shortest rear driveline; at this point it might be easier to stretch the frame and swap on a Hilux or 4Runner body :-\

at that point, you're better off SAS'ing and 4 linking the rear. and stretch the wheelbase that way

An L52 is about 5" shorter if you can find one.

Finally got around to putting the clutch on yesterday, and pulling the EFI setup off to prepare for carburetifying this engine. The cap screw by the thermostat fought me all afternoon, resisting allen wrenches, vice-grips, and cold chisels until I just got the right-angle grinder and cut the head off. Fortunately, this bolt is not needed on the carb intake manifold.

Less fortunately, there are a couple of coolant passages that do not exist on the carb manifold. I guess it's time for some custom block-off plates, huh?

Long overdue update:

The 22R is sitting on a block of wood under the hood, bolted to a W56 with a 4.7 transfer case, a new Aisin clutch, and a new starter motor. The current transmission cross member is a chain, winter and life happened before I could make any more progress. On the upside, my welding skills have been improving enough that I can contemplate fabricating proper motor and transmission mounts.

The discouraging part is that my truck will probably need a new engine and transmission this year, further setting back work on the Rocky :sad2: I'm trying to have faith that it will someday move under it's own power again.

Edit: I noticed this winter that the doors do not seal against snow. :(

Did you pick those items up locally (engine, tranny, tcase) or get them from Marlin or some other online vendor?

You had previously bolted the 22 to the stock Rocky mounts. That doesn't work? Or were you concerned about the angle...or something else?

I decided the setup was just a little too sketchy for my liking, plus there were concerns about the bolts transmitting vibration to the frame. Also I was worried about the angle, and with the transmission in place the placement is just a bit wrong. Also I now have a decent welder and enough skill to confidently attempt fabricating and installing proper brackets. I got the transmission and transfer case from H8PVMNT one state away, and the engine locally.

I'll be interested to see if you have anythign to post up as you go. I will be researching for months before I do it. I have enough other things to wait on before doing it.

Did you keep the stock rear axle?

Lewis, did you do anything regarding how everything aligns, from the motor/tcase back to the rear axle? In other words...I know you didn't hook anything up, but how close are they as they sit now?

They are about 5-10 degrees off. I will have to reroute a brake line to make them any better.

Are you trying to have a rear axle that is completely level with the tcase output, or a cardan type shaft? In other words, you're 5-10 degrees off from perfectly level, or what you need for a cardan CV thingy?

Once upon a time there was a Daihatsu Rocky. Yall remember it? It sat around generating 7 pages of forum posts while almost nothing useful got done on it. Finally the little that was done was undone because my pickup needed a transmission. Until one day...

Hmmmmmm.

Hmmmmmm.

I made a video documenting the process. I will post it.... eventually.

I guess maybe I didn't make it clear enough... that engine is being installed so that it can actually make the thing go some day. As I write this it is installed under the hood of the Daihatsu and fits beautifully. Plus I have an old transmission that will go in so this build may, possibly, be coming back to life. I hope!
