"Pinky" the pizzed off 4 banger?
« on: Aug 14, 2017, 08:25:12 AM »
Scored another '81 22r.  My favorite one with the dual timing chain and the steel rockers, for FREEEEEEEE!  :disturbed:.  Have the good crank I polished up and the 22RE Performance 282 cam.  Have a few 20R heads to work with. I even picked up a gasket set for $15 off craigslist a few weeks ago.

We'll see if we can get this engine build going...

Looking foward to it as well! I wonder if you'll have to notch the pistons for the valves to clear? Without knowing the specs, I have a feeling this cam will like higher compression and more port volume to work, can't wait!

One more piece of the puzzle.  Gently used Weber 38 from YooperYota!  Never wanted to pay full price for one of these but I have wanted to get a hold of one since I got my 32/36 just to see what I could do with one.

Still may go side drafts if I can get some but this is an option.  If I can get it tuned it would go good on an irresponsible engine like this.   :silly:

I thought I had better jump on that.  I was going to buy a carb for this next year or rebuild those elusive side drafts but my buddy quit mentioning them since he got a cheap Toyota last month :). I think he has plans for them now. I thought I had better move on and was considering a holley of some sort then that 38 showed up.

I had a holley 390 4 bbl and the 20r intake for it, but sold them both on here and ebay around the time I lost my job   Woulda liked to run it on my 81 22r block, had it not given up the ghost at around 370k miles.

Planning to run the 22r carb now, see if it performs better than the 32/36 did.  I shoulda sent it your way for some tinkering  :wink2:

The boys tore down another early 22r last night.

No maybe you are not my pinky...

Cracked block even, definitely not the pinky.

Head was toast too but we did salvage an amazingly nice crank and a set of rods so it wasn't a total loss.

So I still have this nice 20r block.  According to myths and rumors, the casting is exactly the same so one should be able to bore out a 20r block to 22r size with no drama. Looking at the passages and thickness this seems to be true.  Top 22r block bottom 20r, thicker material.

What year did Toyota change from 20R to 22R ?
Was there any overlap in the years?

What year is the 20R block?

I'm wondering if Toyota modified the 20R block molds so that they could either be 20Rs or 22Rs depending on bore.   (with or without overlap)

1980 was the last model year for the 20r.

The cracked 22r block in the photo is from a 1981 pickup, the 20r block is from a 1980 pickup.  It really looks like the exact same casting.  The 20r has more material around the cyl walls than the 22r I assume because of the same casting but a smaller bore.

Going from my 81 22r block to a 20r block that was bored .60 over and was extremely fresh yielded the worst drop in power I've seen.  If memory serves, that was the only thing I changed at that time, except for maybe going from a cracked and leaking generic 4 into 1 header to the nwor tri-y

22r size would be about .140 more than a 20r bore, and the 22r pistons will net a little compression.  If you had .060 overbore on a 20r and flat tops that would make sense I guess, you would just have a more finicky 20r without the benefits of a hybrid.

The rings are shot in my 4runner so I am thinking of just rebuilding the 20r for that straight up and using my 22r block for this build. Then I can minimize down time by just swapping long blocks out in the 4runner. I think if I bore out the 20r block that much I am taking a chance of wrecking it anyway.

Well this one is on the back burner again since I am using a bunch of my parts to get another engine going in my 4runner.  On the bright side though I haven't been able to acquire a usable early 22r block for this project and that is what I am yanking out of my 4runner, so maybe I can use the leftovers of that engine to make this one...

back in 85 Toysport actually made a 2400cc 20R by boring a 20R block to .180" (i think) so that 1983 22RE Celica pistons would fit.  I have never laid my hands on a set of these mystical pistons but they are said to be 22R dimensions with a top like a 20R piston.  Basically you can make these by putting your stock 22R dog dish pistons in a lathe and turning the dog dish off the top, starting on the inside and going to the outhside it should leave a 2mm drop to the deck like a 20R piston

The rings are shot in my 4runner ...

Hi H8PVMNT,

Sorry for my silly questions...

Did I miss your report on the inspection of the engine tear-down and analysis?

Why do you say they are "shot"?

Do you know the manufacturer or source of the rings?

This is the engine that you rebuilt and failed at 46,000 miles, correct?

Was this block bored?

How much over bored?

What was the crossinghatching spec?  What grit?

Was the bore geometry checked?

Do you remember your break-in procedure?

What break-in oil did you use?

At what mileage after break-in did you switch to another oil?

What oil?

Thanks,

Gnarls.

I have not done the autopsy yet.  The bad rings theory was just speculation. I will post up all details as soon as I tear it down.  I will probably make a new thread for it since it's interesting.

If shipping wouldn't kill it id give you one of the blocks laying in my mom's shop. Once the rig is 3rz swapped the only 22r truck i will have left is an 81 I'm planning do a halfway restoration on.

Are you wanting the early short block or the laser block?

I am kind of stuck on the early blocks because I have a bunch of heads and timing covers laying in my shed :).

Pm me a zip code and I'll see what shipping would be for a block. I imagine it's going to suck but you never know.
