My 1988 4Runner; "The Baroness"
« on: Aug 13, 2017, 08:43:00 PM »
Starting a thread for my Toyota. I've done a lot of work to it mechanically already, and still have a long ways to go. I'll upload pictures of what I have done so far, but right now I am stumped on a project. Bought a LCe header to replace my cracked exhaust manifold, and two things happened. After I got the header in, the pipe they sent doesn't fit to my CAT, so I'm thinking about cutting it myself? Or maybe just taking it to the exhaust shop and having them fabricate something? I don't know. Next thing, one of the bolts that holds the header in, into my block, broke. Erg  :ack:

If I can see the broken part of the bolt, how should I go about getting it out without damaging my new header or bolt??

Id contact LCE, make sure they cant rectify the situation. then id the exhaust shop take care of it if they cant

easy out/bolt extractor or weld a nut to it and back it out.

Then a month later, the head gasket blew. This was last Halloween, a month after the head gasket blew after I got enough money to get the head resurfaced, new pistons and the whole nine yards. Took it out in my shop (I work at a camp with a lot of tools at my use, including a 10,000 pound lift and a tractor) with the CASE, that was fun.

Then I got it back in January, but as you can see still had a lot of work to do. I basically had to assemble and install the whole thing myself. Also, this is the first engine I have ever assembled let alone work on.

New LCE header; exhaust shop told me my exhaust manifold was cracked. I figured I'd replace it with this upgrade rather then try and find another old and used manifold.

While trying to get off my old exhaust pipe, I couldn't heft one of the bolts off that hold the o2 sensor, so after trying to wrench (stripped), cut (didn't work), I eventually just cut the o2 sensor wire and bought a new one from 22rePerformance online, a great spot if you need new OEM parts for your 22re.

While waiting for my O2 sensor to come in the mail, I figured I would just bolt everything together and only need to plug it in and bolt it to the pipe. While trying to get my LAST bolt through the header into the head, the 30 year old. Only broke inside of my brand new header.  :smack:

Chipped out the old broken bolt, and installed all new studs to hold my header. After that i bought a threading bolt and re threaded the spot in mh header that got stripped by the broken bolt, installed it and carefully threaded te new header on in a criss-cross fashion working from the inside out.

So, I'm wanting to upgrade my stock suspension, change the gears, bigger tires and what not. What should I get? Pro-comp, or all pro suspension lift? I've heard G2 gears are good, I'm thinking 4:88's for my DD with 35s. Any tips, comments, I'd like to install myself but I don't have exellent cutting or welding skills.

If I had your rig and was going to run IFS I would use Old Man Emu on it.  Not a big lift but you can run 33s or squeeze 35s with some creative trimming.
We used to make 1" body pucks to get that little extra bit.

Ball Joint Spacers, and 1" Body lift and like a 2-3" block out back and youll be able to clear a 33 no problem. (i ran 33s with minimal trimming on an 87 xcab, 90 4runner, 91 4runner)

Thanks for the feedback guys. My dad, whose done it all before with multiple different 1st gen 4Runner rigs, says to go for an all-pro lift, which would entail a lot of money and requirements I can't meet. A little ways from all of this financially, but I want to start thinking about it so I can make a good decision
