2wd vs 4x4 oil pan?
« on: Jul 15, 2017, 09:08:13 AM »
I have a question about the oil pans on my hybrid motor. It's going into a 4x4, but I don't have a 4x4 oil pickup tube. I have a 2wd oil pickup tube though, so can I use a 2wd oil pan on a 22r that's going into a 4x4 first gen? I guess the real question is, is the 4x4 pan better? Does one hold more oil?

Hey MrFatEggs,

I believe the oil pans and oil pickup tubes are different between a 22R 2-wheel drive and 22R 4-wheel drive.  So you will need a 4-wheel drive pan and 4-wheel drive oil pickup tube.

The 22R crank case oil capacity is 4.9 quarts, so both pans are spec’d to hold the same amount of oil.

But why are they different?

Solid axle could be for solid axle clearance.

With my IFS 86, there's a mini shield/skid plate welded to the bottom of the pan,   that might be the only difference.........

The oil pick up tubes are also different and they are located in a different position within the sump area for each pan.

If there were no axle clearance issues, then I suppose you could use a 2WD oil pan with a 2WD oil pickup tube.

However, the 4WD pan is most likely designed for best oil pump pick up at various potential vehicle angles, minimizing oil pump cavitation and bearing lube starvation.... just guessing.

We are running a 2WD oil pan on my kids truck and the solid axle is caving in the front of the oil pan quite a bit. It's not an emergency but we will swap it out for a 4WD pan and pick up soon.

I would run the 4WD pan for sure.
