Frame paint?
« on: May 30, 2017, 07:38:35 PM »
I have the bed/box off my Xtracab, and I figured it'd be a good time to take care of the back rails and paint them.
What would you all recommend for paint? I know some people swear by POR15, obviously that would require a in depth wire wheel job and a good coat of paint after the POR15 gets laid on.
What about just rattle can? Just a bunch of Rust-Oleum black? I just don't want the damn thing to rust. Here's a few pics, no rot at ALL, stranger for a northwest truck. Especially with the harsh Utah winter's.

I would use the Rustoleum Rust Reformer, then paint it if you want, but go with the brush on rustoleum over the rattle can.

Wanted to show you guys what I ended up doing.
Due to unforeseen complications, I didn't have time to do a full POR15 coating. I had to deal with some stupid insurance stuff from when I got T-boned (in this truck).
I ended up wiring wheeling the ENTIRE frame, and primered and painted the whole thing with spray cans.
I would've liked to do the better option, but I didn't have time.

Looks good, what brand of paint did you use.? Gloss or semi gloss?

I used a base primer, automotive primer from Rustoleum. After that I hit it with gloss black.
It took 2 cans of primer and 4 cans of black. I could've used more paint though, I wish I had like 6 cans of black.

Looks good, much better than leaving it as it was, good job.  If you have time and get those extra couple of cans of paint, it wouldn't hurt to give it some more attention. The American way is "If a little is good, a lot more is Better".   :beerchug:

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I would've done POR15 but I just didn't have the time. I plan on getting a 3rd gen pickup bed at some point, and when that happens I'll POR15 for sure.

its not as much more work to do at all.....
but wear two pairs of gloves as you do it.
used some good nitrile technician gloves from my work...
as i painted one ripped on the frame, which wasn't a big deal.
but man i had that paint stuck on my hands for at least a week.
